Tallmadge, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Stark County. The population was 7,752 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern border of Stark County and is bordered by Trumbull County to the north, Holmes County to the east, and Geauga County to the south. The area that now Tallmadge was first settled in 1786 by Sylvester Chafee and his family who had emigrated from Rhode Island. In 1812, James Ketchum purchased land in what is now Tallmadge from Chafee for $3 per acre (this amount has not changed since). The town was platted on April 20, 1814 by John Prentice with land bought from Daniel Boone at cost of $5 per acre. On December 8, 1828, a post office called "Tallmadge" was established under government jurisdiction but its purpose remains unknown; it may have been discontinued because no mail reached Tallmadge from Stark or Trumbull Counties until after 1830. In 1840, when Trumbull and Holmes Counties were created within Stark County, Tallmadge became their county seat. However, this decision was overturned in 1851 upon recommendation of commissioners George Fenton and James Prentice; afterward it reverted to Knoxville until 1901 when it again became an unincorporated community within Stark County limits. During World War II much development took place in nearby Sandusky which included expanding into what is now Trumbull Township; however during peacetime all large industrial plants closed or moved away leaving only small businesses open that continued through various upbringings including periods during which demand outstripped supply resulting in prices becoming unsustainable before eventually closing down overall due to market saturation or economic reasons such as automation/industrial decline etc.; some plants did remain open for another decade or more as smaller companies took over previously vacated locations near new production facilities while others closed altogether although many still remain abandoned today despite pressure from developers seeking more tax revenue for infrastructure projects rather than reducing pollution levels around these sites). Tallmadge, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,878 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1814. It became a the county seat of Stark County on March 15, 1829. The name Tallmadge comes from the Irish word "tall" (a high mountain) and "madge" (a wild oats plant). The first settler to arrive in what is now Tallmadge was James McKay who built a log cabin on the banks of the Muskingum River in 1814. In 1830, John Fenton bought land north of present day Tallmadge and laid out a townsite with foursquare blocks designated as "streets". He named it after his friend and mentor General David Dennison who had commanded American forces during the Battle of Fallen Timbers near Dayton, Ohio on November 11, 1794. The first post office opened in 1821 under the name of Canton. It moved to its current location at East Broad Street in 1928 after being located for two years at Montgomery Road east of town. The original three-story frame building served as Post Office & Market Place until 1941 when it burned down. A new three-story building erected between 1951 and 1954 served as Post Office & First National Bank until its closure in 1991. In 1912 local resident Augustus Kelley donated land south of town along Muskingum River for use as an agricultural preserve known as Kelley Park which still includes today'sVector Nursery School within its boundaries
