The first coffee beans were roasted and ground by the parents of the current owner of the business in 1913. In 1916, Mr. and Mrs. John Hildebrandt opened a grocery store on Third Street that became home to the first small-batch espresso machine in town. By 1922, they had developed their own brewing process which produced cups of delicious coffee that are still enjoyed today. In 1951, the Hildebrands sold their business to Donny & Marie Kapp who operated it until 1976 when they passed it down to their son Dennis who continued to operate it until 2009 when it was purchased by Doug Coates Sr. In 2009, Doug Coates Jr.'s son DougCoates III took over and continues to run the business as it has since 1971 with only occasional changes (such as adding milk). The Sylvania community was founded in 1824 by John Arents and his family as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1836, John Arents' grandson, Augustus Arents, organized a meeting to discuss creating a town in what is now Sylvania Township. On July 9, 1836, Augustus Arents donated land to create the town of Sylvania Township. The first settler in Sylvania was James Sennett who built his home oncurrent site of State Route 22 and Main Street in 1847. In 1850 local farmers formed a millstone company that became one of the most important economic engines in township history; it manufactured stone tools and stones for churches and other buildings throughout Summit County until its closure in 1978 due to economic conditions. In 1861 John Beasley opened Beasley's store on present day Main Street which became an important commercial center for township residents during the early years of its growth; it remains an important landmark today within the boundaries of Sylvania Township.
