Sylvania, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,417 at the 2010 census. Sylvania was founded in 1814 by John Dickey and his wife Rachel. It was named for Sylvanus Copley, an English general who fought in the American Revolution. The townsite where Sylvania now stands was first settled by farmers in 1827. In 1830, a post office called Sylvania was established; it stopped operating in 1851. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century because of its strategic location on the Scioto River near other agricultural settlements and its access to transportation links such as railways and canals. By 1900, Sylvania had a population of 10,000 people. In 1915, the city of Dayton merged with Sylvania; this madesylvanian status an official city-maintained distinction rather than vesting it solely with the town of Sylvania. During World War II, many residents of Sylvania worked on Project Paperclip – helping to send Americans to work in Nazi Germany – but most were arrested or transported back home before hostilities began. In 2007–2008, community members raised over $2 million towards buying back land that once comprised part of downtown Sylvania from developers who had taken advantage of zoning changes meant to encourage development adjacent to the water feature which buttressed downtown's character andhistoric significance (see history section below).
