Sylvania, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio located in Vandalia County. The population was 5,596 at the 2010 census, down from 6,044 at the 2000 census. Sylvania is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The Sylvania Area School District has two schools: Sylvania Intermediate Unit 2 and Sylvania High School which serve students in grades 9-12. There are also three private schools that share space with the district - Stroudsburg Catholic Academy (grades K-8), Willow Run Preparatory Institute (9-12), and Scioto Valley Christian School (PreK-8). According to The Oxford English Dictionary, "sylvania" means "a large green field between two villages", and "high school" may refer to either sr high or sylvania intermediate unit 2—the latter being on top of Rockspring Hill in downtown Sylvania. The town was founded by Germans in 1814 as Westover Township on land grants from British general George Washington during his tenure as military commander over what is now Vandalia County. In 1825, Westover Township was renamed Sylvanburg after John C.'s surveyor for central Ohio James M'Guire and became an incorporated village with a board of trustees under president David Denny on November 1, 1827 (). On January 1st, 1901 (), it merged into Cleveland Municipal Borough due to increasing population density within Cleveland's limits (). On July 16th of that year (), it became a city with its own mayor(). In 1925 when Lake Erie froze over again and portions of eastern Ohio were covered with nearly six feet (1 m) of ice throughout most of March–May due to a severe cold snap caused by Typhoon Odile (), parts of southeastern Cleveland were included within the boundaries of Sylvania until full incorporation occurred on November 1st 1926 (). At first all citizens paid property taxes only to be charged income taxes upon annexation into Cleveland Municipal Borough; however this changed on December 15th when voting began for Mayor who were then elected by popular vote rather than by property owner election as had been done before (). As City Council meetings were not held concurrently with Borough Council meetings because they took place outside city limits every other weeknight like Borough Council meetings did prior to 1978 when public transportation become available inside city limits instead thereof we have no record nor website pertaining specifically to City Government Activities during That Period...It would appear that Incorporation didn't result in any substantive change except for some new names given to various neighborhoods adjacent unto their former township boundaries... On July 16th 1969 notice was published through the local paper that Western Reserve University would be opening up their education campus in nearby Berea Heights just east off Route 422 next door to our old high school! This left many people excited as they thought their children could finally attend college closeby! Unfortunately less than one year later construction started on site but stopped after only 8 months because there wasn't enough money raised! This set off another controversy as many people felt that LICU should have been given more credit instead OF WSU! Finally construction resumed in May 1972 but again stopped short because lackadaisical attitudes continued even after offers came in from different universities! We rejoiced when news broke backchannel USA Today reporter Jon Meacham had actually visited WSU while he was writing an article about community colleges near Toledo which at the time made us very hopeful !! However 3 years later MEACHAM reported THAT THE SCHOOL WAS CLOSED AGAIN AND NOT OPEN TO STUDENTS ANYMORE!!! Another disappointment for those who waited so long!! One must wonder what might have happened if SrHigh had never closed????? ...Today much activity takes place Downtown including restaurants and nightlife....... although rates continueto increase significantly against what used To be offered hereabouts
