Sylvania is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 14,854 at the 2010 census. Sylvania was founded in 1814 and became a city on February 17, 1893. It is the second oldest continuously-operating city in the United States after Newark, New Jersey. The Sylvania area has been inhabited by Native Americans for many centuries and was part of the Northwest Territory until it was acquired by the US when it gained independence from Great Britain in 1783. Sylvania's first settler were Andrew Jackson and his family who arrived there in 1814; they were among the first white people to settle west of the Allegheny Mountains. In 1825, David Blight moved to Sylvania from Bedford Township, Pennsylvania with his family and started an agricultural laboring community called "Blightstown." In 1840, Amos Kendall settled here as well and built him a home which still stands today on North Broadway Street. This location served as a base for operations for stagecoaches running between Dayton and Cincinnati during this time period (the first such service being operated on May 12th of that year). After purchasing what is now known as Kendall's corner lot from Amos Kendall in 1851 he began developing what would become downtown Sylvania into its current form including construction of numerous buildings: The First National Bank Building (1853), Butler School House (1855), Market House (1857), American Hotel (1858), Masonic Temple (1860) etc., followed by later additions like First Congregational Church (1892) and Second Baptist Church (1929). The economic development of downtown Sylvania during this time period helped spur growth around it with various businesses opening up including grocery stores such as Jardin & Co., Hormel Bros., KrogerCo., Smith's Drug Store etc.; hotel/motels like Holiday Inn/Loews Casino; restaurants like Curly Boy's Pizza Place; banks like First National Bank/Bannerman Trust Company etc.; and manufacturing plants such as Pabst Brewing Company which constructed their headquarters here. Additionally, streetcars ran through downtown Sylvanian providing transportation for residents within town limits without ever having to leave their homes. These streetcar lines continue to serve neighborhoods outside of downtown until their closure in 1957 following suburbanization of central Lucas County. One unique aspect of downtown Sylvania during this time period were its weekly markets which featured local produce from local farmers while also featuring local artisanal products from merchants within town itself - something that continues to be popular to this day! In addition to these weekly markets Downtown also experienced several special events each week that attracted attention both within town bounds as well as beyond - some examples include concerts at Butler School House or American Hotel sponsored by civic organizations or dances held at Market House! On July 4th 1907 Mayor John Fenton announced plans for what would become one of America's most infamous watermelon elections - an event that would see candidates competing directly against each other instead of via ballot box! This event led to more than 1 million dollars being raised for election causes throughoutLucas County resulting in over 60% voter turnout! A new courthousewas built nearby during this time period but due primarily to financial reasons wasn't completed until 1921 when Allen Wagoner became mayor after winning an election against incumbent James Kappenberger! Downtown Sylvanias growth slowed down significantly beginning around 1960s although some recent additions have resurrected its nickname "The City Within The City" due largely to its proximity to major metropolitan areas - containing all 7 municipalities located within Lucas County plus portions of neighboring Hamilton county! Today Downtown remains one Of The Most Active areas WithinLucas County And constitutes One Third Of Total Population
