It became a village on November 15, 1802 when all of Mahoning County were organized into townships. On February 13, 1825, Sylvania became a city under the name of "Sylvania Heights". On May 3rd of that year; City Hall burned down and most of the records were lost but some are still preserved at The University Library Special Collections department at Youngstown State University where they are on display as part of their collection related to early American settlement in this area
Sylvania was founded in 1833 by Sylvanus C. Caldwell, a landowner and fur trader who also developed the town's first school. The town grew quickly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1851, Sylvania became a village, and in 1863 it became a city.
