Sylvania is a small town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Sylvania is located on the west side of the Scioto River and is bordered to the east by Marion and to the south by Butler. It is adjacent to Mentor and Highland Heights. The first Europeans to visit Sylvania were French traders who landed there in 1690. In 1793, Sylvania's first post office opened with ten mailing stamps from Cincinnati. By 1821, when it became part of the United States, Sylvania had a population of 350 residents. On July 4, 1825, a schoolhouse fire destroyed most of what remained of downtown Sylvania (although some buildings still stand). In 1830s two men named John Dandridge and Nicholas Hennepin started an agricultural enterprise that would become one of Ohio's largest cotton plantations; they also donated land for a public school system which opened in 1836. One year later (1839), brothers Elijah Purdy and John Purdy founded their own paper mill in town which helped increasesylvanian commerce as well as build up infrastructure for mills throughout Summit County including churches and schools that remain today among its many legacy assets. On November 3rd 1870 Union forces attacked & burned down all but four buildings in downtown Sylvania due to Confederate sympathies

Sylvania is a small town in the northwest corner of Ohio, north of Columbus. Sylvania was founded in 1814 by Methodist missionaries. The town lies on the Scioto River, about 16 miles (25 km) northeast of downtown Columbus and 8 miles (13 km) west of the University of Kentucky campus. Its population was 11,569 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Sylvania were those from Holland who came in 1814 and found a French trading post there. The area now known as Sylvania was part of Muskingum County then triangularly bounded by Georgetown to the east, Athens to the south, and Sandusky to the west. By 1830 it had become an agricultural village with 3 stores and a school. A mill operated here until 1836 when it was destroyed by fire. during World War II, Sylvania played an important role as one of six towns located along Route 66 that supported military production in munitions factories throughout Northeast Ohio. The town became nationally well-known for its Jenner's apple brandy which was produced at three factories located there: Pfeiffer Glass Works (now UMI Corporation), Wernher Lohse & Sons Inc., and Dayton Arsenal Co-operative Union No 5 Menzies Ltd..
Sylvania was founded in 1814 by Jonathan Sylvanus and his wife, Susannah. The town grew quickly, and in 1824, Sylvania became the first city in Ohio to be incorporated. In 1830, the Sylvanian Academy was founded in Sylvania, which continues to provide education for residents today. In 1870, businesses began moving from Sylvania to larger metropolitan areas throughout the United States during the industrial revolution; however, large majorities of businesses still remained headquartered in Sylvania until about 1990.
