The Struthers Police Department has a rich history dating back to 1892. The department was formed as the village of Struthers agreed to allow a single constable to police the town. The first officer, Sergeant John A. Doyle, served for one year and then was replaced by Officer James Hickey who served for 10 years. In 1922, the department purchased its first vehicle, a Ford car. In 1936, the department acquired its first set of training equipment, including handcuffs and radios. In 1948, Officer James J. Higgins became the first officer inStruthers to be promoted to sergeant status after serving for 3 years as an instructor at Central Ohio State College (now Ohio University). In 1954, Officer Harry Ahern was hired as the new strutureal officer and began duty on December 1st with a budget of $2,500. This money was used to purchase additional equipment such as lights and radio telescopes which were added to the department’s inventory in 1955-1956. On November 5th of that year officers Harry Ahern and Donald Fenton responded to a call about “a man with a gun” who had refused orders from other officers when they were attempting to arrested him on charges of disorderly conductipoliceman Harry Ahern wrote in his report: “I arrived on scene just in time to witnessing Mr Fenton pulling out his service revolver preparatory theretoto shoot this man dead instantaneously upon my arrival”This event is often cited as being one of the most dramatic moments in Struthers Police Department history because it was witnessed by both Officers Ahern and Fenton who would go onto become legends within their departments for their actions that day. In 1957-1958 additional equipment such as patrol cars and shotguns were purchased which helped increase police response times during crime peaks or situations where there may have been too much noise or chaos caused by individuals tryingTo flee an altercation or prior legal proceeding taking place within our community .On July 6th 1958 Sgt William Easley becamethefirstofficerinStritchhespiritual unitandservedforfouryearsuntilhis retirementonJanuary1st 1961 .During these yearsstruturealsuchasOfficerHarryAhern(now deceased),SergeantWilliamEasleyand constablesJohnDoyleandDonaldFentonwererequiredtoperformextra dutiessuch as guarding vital government buildings while officials attending hearings related timportant governmental issues or testifyingbeforejurisdictionswithintheStateofOhioduringthe late1950sandearly1960sandalsorespondedtotriplicatecallsduringSpecialEvents such asMardiGrass1969or America's birthday celebrationin1974 . In 1830 George Washington Carver came to America and built his first grocery store here near present day Lakeside Drive and First Street (now Third Avenue). He continued to operate this business until his death in 1934 when it passed into ownership by Mrs. Clara Barton Hastings who moved it to her house on East Side Road near today's State Fairgrounds before finally selling it to developer Alvaro Arroyo in 1978 The village of Struthers emerged from strutherville Township on December 6th 1907 when all but one block of Second Street (now Main Street) within the boundaries of present-day Strutherville Township were annexed bystrutherville Village creating a unincorporated area that contained all or most of the residences then located withinstrutherville Township limits as well as most commercial buildings including those located on Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue WEST OF STRUTHERVILLE VILLAGELINE
