Struthers is a small town in southwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Struthers is located on the southern edge of Summit County and its boundaries are defined by the Scioto River to the north, US 22 and I-271 to the east, and State Route 10 to the south. The first European settlers in what is now Struthers were Englishmen who arrived in 1795. They named their new settlement after John Struther, an official surveyor for George Washington's administration in Pennsylvania. Struther's Township was organized in 1801, becoming part of Summit County when it was created from parts of Stark and Fairfield counties. The town grew rapidly during America's turn towards machine culture in the early 20th century; many businesses were founded here including A&P grocery stores (1921), cycle shops (1925), auto parts store (1927), post office (1929), steel mill (1930), paper manufacturing plant (1945) and housing developments such as Buckeye Gardens subdivision (1950). In 1954, Struthers became one of thirty townships within cleveland Municipal District #1 when that district was established following a merger of most of Summit County with neighboring Fairfield County. Struthers is a small town in the northeastern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Little Miami River and straddles the border of Delaware County and Wayne County. The first permanent settler in what is today Struthers was Nicholas Struther, who arrived there in 1795. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Struther's Mill". In 1812, he sold land to John Hargrave for $200. By 1870, Struther had developed a cotton gin, gristmill, and six stores into a thriving community with over 100 residents. In 1868, local farmers decided to build a new town on their lands west of town by damming the Little Miami River. They called their new community "Struthers" after Nicholas Struther's mill which they had earlier built on Main Street. By 1870, most of the buildings in Struthers were completed; only the school remained unfinished. The first post office was established in Struthers on November 3rd of that year.* The town quickly became known for its fine cotton mills* which produced finished products such as clothing and paper until World War II when they turned to other industries such as production of munitions *during this time many people lost their jobs due to wartime production shortages. After the war ended many people returned to their old lives but some stayed put and started businesses like real estate or grocery stores.* Today remnants of STRUTHS' original cotton mills can still be seen if you walk downriver from downtown where alligator farming used to take place(*during prohibition years this activity stopped). Also visible are two large concrete blocks that served as storage buildings for STRUTHER'S MILL during prohibition years (*these structures have been preserved thanks to donations from local citizens).*
