The Coast Guard has played a significant role in Struthers since its founding in 1892. The first coast guard station was located on the current site of Struthers Municipal Airport, and the service initially provided humanitarian protection along the Ohio coast. In 1916, the Coast Guard began providing environmental protection by patrolling the local coastline for vessels that were violating US law. In 1947, the Coast Guard moved from its original location onshore to a ship-based station off of Lake Erie. The Station became an important part of coastal security and helped prevent smuggling and piracy activity along both the eastern and western coasts of Ohio. The Station also played a major role in helping to revive fishing industry in Struthers. The Coast Guard currently operates three stations throughout Ohio: one located at Struthers Municipal Airport, one located on Blackhorse Pike near Wooster, and one located off of I-270 in Kent County. These stations provide safety and security for residents along both our domestic and international borders. Today, Struthers is home to several businesses including two banks (one of which has been around since 1860), three churches (including one dating back to 1792), four schools - two high school students attend Northern State University and two elementary school students attend Harding School District No. 2 - Lackawanna County Technical College, four restaurants including one that has been Serve America certified for sustainable seafood certification since 2009, three golf courses - all operated by private clubs - one publically funded park located next to Northern State University's gymnasium/, and five services including pet sitting/dog walking/car care/home health aides.

Another son, John F., played football for Yale University and is considered one of America's most accomplished athletes.
