The Struthers Volunteer Infantry was an Ohio volunteer infantry regiment that was mobilized in December 1861. The regiment began mobilization on December 13 and arrived in the Western Reserve theater of war on the night of December 15. The regiment remained in the theater until May 12, 1862. On May 12, 1862, the regiment relieved the 2nd Brigade, 10th Division, Army of Ohio at Cleveland Heights. The regiment then served with this brigade during the Battle of Perryville on May 18. After this battle, it rejoined its brigade and served as part of that brigade's division at Tullahoma during October 1862-December 1863. In January 1865, the Struthers Volunteer Infantry mustered out at Dayton and returned to Ohio. It was consolidated with other disbanded units to form the 9th Regiment (Ohio) Cavalry on February 14, 1865.
Struthers, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Struthers was Levi Coffin on June 6, 1792. He and his family were farmers and built a log cabin on an bluff overlooking the Scioto River. In 1815, John Coffin bought land from Levi Coffin and built a gristmill on the Scioto River. The town of Struthers was laid out by commissioners in 1819 and named for Commodore James Struthers who had commanded an American squadron at Trafalgar Square during World War I. In 1825, Columbus merchant John Whetstone laid out a town east of present-day Struthers along what is now US Route 422. Whetstone's community failed to take off because it was too far from markets and other settlements and he returned to Columbus in 1827. On December 12, 1830,Struthers became the seat of government for Stark County when it was created from parts of Columbiana County. On January 3, 1831 (the date which remains as its official founding date), Judge Nicholas Paulding organized a meeting to create county courts with power to issue warrants for arrest without probable cause within their jurisdiction The courthouse/ jail building that stands today on Main Street in Struthers was built between 1830-1836 by contractor Elisha Stonebridge under contract with the county court system . At that time there were only one or two sheriff's deputies per township – most residents did not have access to law enforcement services
