Strongsville, Ohio is a small town in the Miami Valley region of Ohio. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Canton–Middletown, OH metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1825 by Solomon Strong and his family. The first post office in Strongsville was established in 1827. In 1830, Isaac Morse moved to Strongsville from Bedford Heights, Pennsylvania and became its first mayor. In 1831, Samuel Colt settled in Strongsville after moving from nearby Delaware County. In 1865, John Daugherty built a sawmill on the river near present-day North High School; it continues to be operating as a mill today. In 1870, Elijah Haggerty opened a store on Main Street that became one of the largest such stores in central Ohio until it closed its doors in 1984. Afternoon classes were started at West High School for white students starting on September 9th 1860 and taught by Mrs Fenton who also ran the school during morning hours for black students until May 3rd 1861 when all afternoon classes were discontinued due to budget cuts which had been implemented since Governor Andrew Johnson took office fifty days earlier On October 8th 1861 African Americans began evening classes at West High School through efforts of Reverend Fenton with little success
