Strongsville, Ohio is a small town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Area. The first post office in Strongsville was established on March 4, 1837. In 1870, the village of Strongsville consolidated with the surrounding towns to form what is now Butler County. The county courthouse and jail were built in 1927 and 1929 respectively. In 1932, strongsville became one of three communities within Dayton to be annexed by that city as its western boundary expanded eastward following annexation by Cleveland. The area around Strongsville was settled by Methodists from Kentucky during the 1800s. A large (and still extant) Methodist church and cemetery are located in town center; as well as a small schoolhouse dating from 1875 which has been used for various purposes including storage and as a library since it was renovated in 2002-2003. A number of local businesses have been located around town square: The First National Bank (1892), S&S Lumber Company (1927), Pabst Brewing Company (1936), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (1948), Jimmy Dean's restaurant chain (1973-2002). According to2010 Censuses there are also over 100 resident companies active in Strongsville alone! The current downtown square dates back to 1922 when two blocks of southbound US Route 6 were widenedalked into one long block with an accompanying park/ gardens/ public baths complex added along with several other sizable buildings including a Masonic Temple (#1 on list below) built by Jno Powers after his purchase of land adjacent to Main Street opposite the high school building on that site - this structure remains intact today(2004 photo) - making it one of only a few remaining examples from early 20th century Dayton architecture still standing largely unchanged! After years of decline due primarily to suburban development nearby throughout much of the 21st century however + numerous fires which destroyed many historic buildings downtown (- most recently arson damage done to main temple october 2017 - see attached report for more details)Strongsville experienced significant resurgence beginning again late last decade due largely to both new investment (+ mostly reworking/ rehabilitating existing buildings rather than demolition) along with membership dues generated through events hosted here such as annual bluegrass festival + numerous golf tournaments featuring top professionals locally & nationally held annually+ restoration work completed or pending completion on several key downtown landmarks such as main temple(2005 photo))
The town was founded in 1811 by General George Washington and his aide-de-camp, Colonel James Dearborn. The town name is derived from the Indian word "zhiga." The first settler in Strongsville was Nicholas Young. In 1830, the town plat was filed and the first store was built. A post office was established in 1834 and a school opened in that year. By 1840, there were twenty-four families living in Strongsville. In 1852, the Ohio Railroad came through Strongsville on its way to Cincinnati. This caused great Slashwood (now Dayton) growth as people started moving away from Weaksville to live closer to jobs and opportunities.
