Streetsboro, Ohio is a city in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,008 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskingum County. The University of Akron is located in Streetsboro. It was founded by General William Tecumseh Sherman on November 15, 1824 as a small settlement on the Scioto River near where it crosses into Mahoning County. Its name comes from Stroudsburg Township in Pennsylvania and its location – two miles upstream from the mouth of the Scioto River – made it an ideal site for a military post during the American Civil War because it could be easily defended against Confederate attacks from east of the river. On October 24, 1861, while Sherman was leading his Union army through central Ohio to besiege Cincinnati, he ordered Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer to establish a post at Streetsboro in order to protect his army's supplies and communications moving westward along the river. When Sherman's army reached Cincinnati on November 9, 1861, he determined that street names across town should be changed to reflect his new strategic location within Mahoning County: Cool Spring Street became Union Station Road; High Street became Main Street; and West Side Highway became Indian Hill Boulevard (later State Route 535). A few weeks later, on December 2nd when General Ulysses S. Grant invaded Kentucky via Athens-on-the-Ohio River (now part of Lexington), Streetsboro's mainstreet became Broadway when Grant's forces cameuppance at Perryville Creek just north of town. The building which now houses Artspace Square Complex opened its doors on October 1st 1870 as Chillicothe Opera House with much fanfare due to Mayor John Hylan hosting a ball at which opera singer Adolph Green gave an inaugural performance after being appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant as commissioner of public education for Ohio’s Third District (which included Toledo). The opera house was also used as a United States Military Hospital until 1918 when it closed due to World War I casualties but reopened again in 1922 as the Municipal Theater with seating for 3200 people under management by board members John Hylan and Art Schlitz including future Pulitzer Prize winning playwright August Strindberg who played there firstperformance of "Hedda Gabler" In 1951 Shriver Playhouse transferred ownership back to Music Hall Trust Company which renamed it Cadillac Palace following Cadillac dealership's move from Sunrise Heights/Worthington Heights into downtown Streetsboro In 1957 Cadillac Palace burned down leaving only what remains today of what once were five grandstands facing Fourth Avenue between Park Road & Cedar Street In 1960 Sears Tower went up next door and streets around it were filled with parking lotss making way for giant shopping mall called “Towne Center” which still stands today
