Stow, Ohio is home to the world's second largest coffee machine population. This small town of just over 10,000 people has been producing its own roasts, processed beans and espresso machines since the early 1800s. Today, nearly all businesses in Stow sell coffee and espresso. Coffee first arrived in Stow as part of a wagon train headed toward Ohio's fertile farmlands in the early 1800s. The townspeople soon began to import Turkish and Colombian beans from nearby Dayton, Ohio to produce their own coffee. By 1853, local farmers had produced so much quality coffee that demand was too great for the town's only mill to supply. So the town built a new mill using local resources – including stone quarries – and began manufacturing entire bean coffees instead of just roasted beans. In 1907, Stow began exporting its coffee to Cincinnati and Cleveland. At this point, the shopkeepers who sold coffee started calling themselves " merchants of coffee." Over time these businesses evolved into what we now know as cafes or restaurants serving up delicious cups of Joe every day! Stow, Ohio is a small town located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 553 at the 2010 census, down from 647 at the 2000 census. Stow was founded by George Washington and his troops during their march through southern Ohio in 1792 during what is known as the Northwest Passage Campaign. The town was named for James Stowe, an Englishman who had helped to promote independence in Great Britain. In 1801, when that country became the United States of America, Stow became part of the newly formed Cleveland County and remained so until its merger with Lucas County in 1807. The history of Stow can be traced back to early times when it was part of Preble Township on the border of present-day Clifton and Perry counties. The first permanent settler in what is now Stow dates back to 1792 when George Washington's force passed through southern Ohio on their way northward during what is known as the Northwest Passage Campaign. At that time, James Stowe came overland from London with help from some American colonists to promote independence in Great Britain. He established a trading post near modern day Stawebeck Dam on the Scioto River and began shipping goods out into Lake Erie via boats built by his brother-in-law Nicholas Coles.
