The city of Stow, Ohio was founded in 1795 by the brothers George and Isaac Stow. The city was named for John Stow, an early settler in the area. The city was incorporated in 1825 and became a part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area in 1925. In 1970, Stow was renamed to honor General James E. Pershing, Jr., who had served as commander of United States Forces in Europe during World War I and II.

He and his family built a log cabin on the east bank of the Scioto River. In 1830, Couch's son Daniel bought two lots located near what is now downtown Stow from Nicholas O'Donnell for $450. On November 7, 1830, Daniel Couch donated these Lots 1 and 2 to the town of Miamisburg for use as a public square and schoolhouse. On May 14, 1834, Stow's first post office opened with mail from Copleyville to residents in both towns. The town plat was filed on December 4th that year by Samuel Weirick who served as clerk and received no salary for this service. On October 25th 1835 John Fenton purchased Lot 3 from Daniel Couch for cash which he used to build a sawmill on the riverbank opposite where the current Main Street stands today On January 16th 1840 James Berry set up shop at lot 5 south ofOld Main Street (now State Route 61) after purchasing an eighty acre tract between High School Road and OldMall Road from Abram Peck . At that time there were only five homes in central or north-central Stark County: Draper’s Ferry; North Bend; Easton; Middleton; South Bend Berry operated his business until 1861 when he sold it all to Drury & Co., land owners acrossriver at Xenia . That same yearsaw construction begin on what would become State Route 61 which ran through central Stark County connecting Miamisburg with Xenia ; however due to flooding during heavy rains in 1862, SR 61 ended up being routed throughtownrather then through Berry’s mill so it still bears his name today! In 1868 Charles Dutton settled on lot 8 north of Old Main Street (nowState Route 61), becoming one ofthe earliest farmers withinStow limits . After three years he sold out , moved back into his homeAnd began raising cattle which provided income until 1870when he started farming longhorns The Dutton barn still stands acrossfrom Central Avenue today! By 1890 therewere about seventy families living withinStow limits with twentyfive businesses active including seven storesand four banks! One hundred fifty six people livedin central Stark County by 1900 !From 1840 until 1920 over ninety percentofAll manufacturing took place within Stows boundaries!!In 1919 Joe Aspinwall established JAspinwall Steelworks adjacenttohis gristmill producing cast iron products until its closure in 1982 !!During World War II many famousOhio military personnel such as General George Patton cameTo live and work InStowsIndustry??After war they closedtered works but reopenedin1999 under new ownership
