Steubenville is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,745 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The current mayor is Darnell Earley. The first permanent settler in Steubenville was John Steuben who arrived about 1800 from Germany. He built a log cabin on the bank of the Monongahela River and named it "Steubenville". A post office was established at Steubenville on January 10, 1821, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1832. A store and mill were built near Steubenville by James Fenton around 1830; these buildings still stand today. A school was also built near this time but its use is unknown. By 1840, most of what is now Steubenville had been organized as a town under the name "Bellevue". In 1847, Josephine Hinton founded "The Ladies' Home Journal" which published for more than sixty years before being sold to William Randolph Hearst in 1951. In 1870–71, John Heisman played football for Yale University and led the New England Bulldogs to an undefeated season that year and their fourth national championship game appearance (the first team from Connecticut to do so). After his playing career concluded he took over coaching duties for Yale’s athletic program and led them to two more championships during his eight seasons with the Bulldogs (1873-1879). Some people say that Heisman’s innovations such as holding “position plays” – where one player acted as both fullback and end – may have helped lead Yale to their ultimate success; others credit him with developing new playcalling techniques which became integral parts of modern college football programs (e.g., I-formation RB formations). ertonstein High School located just east of town served as homecoming/ farewell ceremonies site for many local high school graduates including Heisman himself prior to his death in 1921 while they attended Cornell University together There are plans underway by some residents of Steubenville to erect an archway or memorial service plaza within walking distance of EHHS that would honor Mr. Heisman's memory SteubenVILLE ... STEUBENVILLE URBAN GEOGRAPHY People who live here think there might be something special about this place because their family has always been involved with agriculture or farming - my ancestors came from Austria but we've been living here since 1865 when our great grandfather immigrated here through Ellis Island
