The history of roasted coffee in Steubenville, Ohio is long and complex. The first Coffee Growers Cooperative was organized in 1909, and by 1913 the small town had its own grocery store and roasting shop. In the 1920s, a local mill began to ROAST coffee beans. This caused a big difference in taste between fresh-roasted and processed beans, which led to the development of two different types of roasters: large regional mills that roast their own beans on site, and small-townand family-owned roasters that purchase whole bean from smaller mills. In the 1970s, a new type of roast was developed called Dark Roast. This variety is darker than other varieties and has a more robust flavor. It became popular because it can be used for espresso drinks with strong flavors like chocolate or peppermint oil. In recent years, there have been increasing efforts to recycle old coffee grounds as part of an effort to conserve resources.

The first espresso machine was built in 1858, and in 1865, Mr. and Mrs. George Peet opened the first espresso shop in Steubenville. In 1892, Mr. John Fenton began importing Italian beans from Rome to make his own espresso drinks at his store on Main Street called "Fenton's" before becoming one of Ohio's largest coffee producers with over 1,500 acres of production land. By 1924, Fenton Coffee had relocated to its current location on East Market Street in Steubenville after purchasing a large amount of land adjacent to the existing store on West Market Street. The company produced over 2 million cups of coffee each year until its closure in 1991 due to economic factors outside of their control.

Steubenville, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European tosight Steubenville was on May 10, 1781 when Captain George Washington and his party set out from Yale University for what would be his second visit to North America. On their trip down the Maumee River they met with local tribes who invited them into their village for dinner. One evening after dinner Washington and some of his men went back upriver to see if they could catch any fish while others explored a nearby swamp. Upon returning they found that all the fish had been taken and there were no plants or trees available so they decided to return home early the next day. It wasn't until 1814 when an American trader by the name of John Stevens discovered Steubenville and its area when he was trading goods along the Scioto River between Cincinnati and Toledo. Stevens named the area Steubenville because of its resemblance to Schoenenburg, Germany where he had grown up during his childhood days which included watching Hessian troops march through town streets as part of military exercises. In 1826 two young men from Steubenville were arrested for participation in a riot that took place in Athens, Ohio while attending college there. The arrests made national headlines and helped start public awareness about crime in small towns across America at that time. In 1827 two more young men from Steubenville were arrested for participating in a riot that took place in Painesville Township near Cleveland Heights while attending college there also. These riots led to stricter laws being passed regulating college campuses across America which continue to this day includingSteubenville’s own online community called “Ohio Student Union (OSU)” which remains one of today's most popular student organizations on campus despite recent allegations against some members thereof). In 1830 three local boys- brothers Isaac, Josephine, Andres- founded what would become known as "The White Stockings" football team based out of their home field located on Main Street just north of downtown Steubenville proper although it didn't play its first game until 1902! Their coach/manager/founder Peter Steinmetz served as backfield manager/quarterback/kickoff specialist throughout their history (and even still does occasionally), leading them to three state championships (1830; 1840; 1850) before disbanding due largely to player attrition during World War II followed by geographic relocation away from Lima Road Stadium following an Earthquake devastating those neighborhoods adjacent thereto within minutes following game night services...Although disbanded again since 1945 (!), OSU alumni have maintained strong ties (both professional & recreational) with various incarnations thru both intercollegiate & intrastate sports programs spanning many decades...Today "The White Stockings" are considered one halfofthe ALL-TIME GREATEST AMERICAN FOOTBALL TEAM by NCAA Hoax Museum researchers...) .

In 1853, Luigi Fratelli developed an early automatic espresso machine that allowed for quick and easy preparation of drinks such as cappuccino and latte macchiato. At this point, espresso machines were largely divided into two main classes: manual machines where you produced single servings or cups at a time (e.g., perusing Starbucks), andautomatic machines where you took advantage of self-cleaning technologies (e.g., DeLonghi). In 1865, Angelo Moroder founded La Marzocco while Nicola Pezzotta ran De Lorenzis Cafeteria in Rome—the first Italian café to serve quality drip coffee over hot water pressures from a tank on the ground floor below.] In 1927–28 Carlo Lavigna opened his Lavigna Coffee Factory near Milan; at this point he had become one of the leading exporters of fresh roasted coffee beans around the world. Lavigna's factoryproduced about 1 million pounds (454 kg) per year of fresh-roasted coffee beans by 1938[1]]. By 1925–26 Italian coffeeshops were serving up about 6 kilos (13 lb) each morning on average[2], making fresh-roasted coffee oneof the most popular beverage choices among Italians [3]. However, due to World War II economic sanctions against Germany,[4] production peaked only at about 350 thousand pounds/year by 1945[5]. As a resultof these restrictions on Italian exportation,[6], there was relatively little market demandfor high quality Dutch-owned Swiss-operated French roasting factories producing similar grade coffees throughout much OF Europe during this period.[7] This situation changed whenSwiss manufacturer Stromboli reopened its original refineries after World War II; startingin 1951 they started exporting freshly roasted Colombian coffeeseeds direct to European countries including Great Britainand France; this increased demand ledto renewed interest in international trade within Switzerland itself []]. Consequently,, startingcircuitously throughout Europe during this period,,freshly roasted Belgian Coffeeseeds became increasingly popular too []]. Additionally,—manufacturers who relocated their operations outside OF Europeduring this period—were able to produce highquality coffeeseeding directlyto various European countries ([8]). Finally,—bythe late 1970s—most large global retailers carried bothfreshly roasted Colombian coffeeseeds AND French origin)"Robust" blends that contained significant proportionsof Arabica Species)—leading some criticsto dub these "mixed bag" items "bad cafés"—suggestingthat adulterated foreignrown skimmed off entire barrels might account forvarious unsatisfactory characteristics observedin these blends ([9],[10]).

There is no one definitive account of how coffee became popular in the world. While there are some clear references to coffee being enjoyed by humans as early as 3000 BC, it wasn't until the 16th century that beans started to be grown successfully and roasted at home. Coffee began to spread throughout Europe and North America during this time, becoming a popular drink for both breakfast andlater afternoon snacks. The first commercial roasting establishments were set up in the mid-19th century, and Roasters Guild International was formed in 1961 to help promote and protect the quality of coffee products. In 2002, Starbucks became the first company to sell ground coffee direct to consumers.

In Steubenville, Ohio, there has been a long and rich history of community activism. In 1838, the town started a school to help its residents learn more about their surroundings. Three years later, they established the first library in the United States. And in 1849, they founded the first post office in America. Despite these accomplishments, it was not until 1907 that Steubenville became a city. The town of Steubenville, Ohio was founded in 1786 by German immigrants. The town became a center for agriculture and industry during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1904, the town was renamed after General George Washington Steuben. The population of Steubenville grew rapidly during the 20th century, reaching 100,000 by 1960. However, political and social unrest led to a decline in population over the next decade or so. Today, Steubenville is a small community with a few hundred residents.
