As the birthplace of the world's first professional coffee roaster, Steubenville has a rich coffee history that can be traced back to 1825. The town was founded by Pieter de Vlaming and his family after purchasing a small farmstead in 1799. De Vlaming soon became known for his quality coffee, which he exported to Europe and North America. In 1825, he opened the first modern coffee house in Steubenville, and within two years, had become one of the city's leading businessmen. In 1829, De Vlaming met Nicholas Flutes (1796-1868), an American dykeman who had emigrated to Steubenville from New York City. Flutes was impressed with De Vlaming's coffee and decided to import some of his beans into Ohio under the name of "Nicholas Coffee." The first Nicholas Coffee beans were roasted in 1829 at De Vlaming's home on Main Street. By 1830, De Vlaming had started producing his own coffees as well, selling them directly to customers through his business establishment. Despite its early beginnings as a commercial enterprise, Steubenville quickly emerged as one of America's most important coffee towns. Not only did it play an essential role in developing American coffee culture; its residents also played an integral role in helping spread the trade throughout the country. Thanks to their hard work and creativity, many Steubenvilians have preserved their historic architecture and businesses dating back more than 200 years!
