Steubenville, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio that is located on the Steubenville-Warren County line. The population was 12,898 at the 2000 census. The town was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Steuben and his brother Jacob Steuben. It is named after General George Washington's estate, Mount Vernon in Virginia. The first store in Steubenville was built by John Fritsch in 1815, and the first school was built in 1816 by Amos Kendall. In 1830, a post office called Steubenville was established, and it remained in operation until 1902. The first mayor of Steubenville was John Witherspoon. In 1868, the town had a population of 511 people and an academy for girls called Bellefontaine Female Academy; it closed down in 1870 due to financial problems. In 1920, Forney Manufacturing Company opened up its plant on Main Street; it produced munitions during World War II. Steubenville, Ohio is an unincorporated community located in Wayne County, Ohio, United States. The post office was established at the site in 1837. The community has been known variously as "The Town of Steubenville", "The Village of Steubenville", and "Steubenville Township". It is named after George Washington Steuben, a local landowner who donated the land for the community. The first settler in Steubenville was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1836. The townspeople built a log cabin on the east bank of the Maumee River. They used it as their headquarters until they erected a more permanent structure in 1839. That year, they also elected their first mayor, John Jansen. In 1842, steamer Lake Erie left Cleveland with a load of goods destined for Toledo and stopped at Steubenville to discharge its passengers and crew. A group of men from SteubenVILLE gathered around the boat to watch as one of the ship's cannons fired into the air to celebrate their victory over Commodore Perry's forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Afterward, they constructed a rustic wharf next to where Lake Erie still docks today and started trading goods with Toledo and other villages downstream. By 1865, most of what is now Steubenville had been developed into what is now suburban Detroit by settlers from that area attracted by cheap land prices near Toledo Bend Railway Depot on Maumee River north of town center. It wasn't until 1870 that residents voted to annex part of neighboring Carroll Township because they feared that if they didn't have something to share with those living there (the rest of Wayne County), they would soon become just another block or two away from Dayton Avenue on our city limits! In 1880 then Wm Crain organized trustees for village school district #1 which included present-daySteUBenVILLE; he served as trustee until his death in 1904; biosketch available upon request
