The history of Springfield goes back to 1792 when French traders settled on this site along the Maumee River. They called it Pointe-à-Pitre after Pointe-à-Mère, which was then located in Quebec City. When General George Washington arrived in America on July 4th, 1790 he found this site heavily populated by French Canadians who had been driven out of their homes during Queen Victoria’s War with Great Britain seven years earlier. Washington ordered all French Canadian residents to leave within 24 hours or face military retaliation if they did not vacate without weapons or goods! Unfortunately for these brave pioneers, only 10% left before British forces burned their homes down! In 1812, Captain David Rennie donated land to form what would become Springfield Township; also known as “Rennie” Township because its first settler – David Rennie – donated his entire estate including 1/4 acre for each person living thereon according to township minutes from March 15th 1813. At that time there were just 12 families living in “Rennie” Township; however over time more families moved into other townships within Greene County until it included present day Dayton Township which includes much of downtown Springfield today! After becoming an independent city in 1907 (due mostly to efforts by Mayor Harry Chandler), President William McKinley awarded territorial status to what would become Dayton on October 16th 1902 which set off many changes for both cities including annexation of neighboring communities such as Miamisburg (now Urbana) and Springdale (now Lebanon). Many famous citizens lived or worked in both cities during this period including former President Ulysses S Grant and banker Andrew Mellon! In 1815, Congress passed an act creating the Territory of Illinois which included Springfield. On December 1, 1816, General Anthony Wayne reached Springfield from Detroit with his army and took possession of the town.
