Springfield, Ohio is a town in Licking County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Springfield was George Rogers Clark in 1796. In 1814, he and his family moved from Kentucky to western Ohio and founded the city of Springfield on the Scioto River. Ford (1827-1900), an American politician and member of the Ulysses S. Grant administration as Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant's presidency, was born in nearby Mentor; his father had also been born thereabouts some years earlier.[1] In 1828, when land that would become Springfield was surveyed for a town square were laid out by John Wilkinson (1792-1863), one of itsFeatures were "a large piece of ground lying east of High Street [now Fourth Avenue], bounded by Clinton and Washington Streets" which later became known as "Greene Square".[2] The square served as a meeting place for township meetings until it was destroyed by fire in 1865 while being used as a military encampment during the American Civil War[3]. On July 4th 1873, residents of neighboring Coventry Township voted to incorporate as a town following their request to do so in an election held two weeks earlier[4]. On November 3rd 1870,[5] voters in Perry Township approved incorporation into Licking County after ballots were sent back with similar results[6]. On February 10th 1871,[7] Niles Park commissioners agreed to annex Perry Township into Springfield if both townships met certain requirements including having a combined population greater than 575 souls; this annexation occurred five days later on February 14th[8][9]; however, due to other township approvals pending at county level upon incorporationemerging into effect prior to this date,[10], Perry Township technically remained unincorporated throughout these events. This status quo continued until 1907 when finally all but three precincts within Perry Townshipwere annexed into Springfield proper through resolutions passed at various commission meetings; thus becoming one municipality with 1,093 residents despite continuing unincorporation[11][12][13][14]. The growth and development that followed during this time led to several prominent people residing within Springfield including: General James Halleck (known for leading General Sherman's army through Georgia during World War I)[15]; former mayor William Ahern (served from 1893-1901)[16]; actor/director Edwin Booth (brother of stage star Mary Pickford)[17]; Congressman David Levy (D-OH) [18]; business magnate Wm Davenport Jr.[19]; author Fenton Johnson [*]20; physician Drs Norman Cushing [*21][22] among others. On July 4, 1837, Springfield, Ohio was founded when a group of farmers led by Daniel Shafer built the first permanent home on the current site. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s as people from nearby towns started moving in to make their homes in Springfield. By 1850, the community had a population of over 1,500 people and was hosting an annual fair. In 1853, Springfield became part of the newly formed United States territory of Kansas. When Missouri seceded from the Union in 1861, Springfield became part ofKansas too. The town's growth slowed down during the 1860s and 1870s as wariemntal businesses closed down and residents turned to farming or other pursuits. However, by 1880, Springfield had regained its former importance as a center for commerce and culture. During Reconstruction Period (1868-1877), Springfield played an important role in helping to create new African American communities in major American cities such as New York City and Chicago.
