Springdale is a small town in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Daytona Metropolitan Statistical Area. Springdale is located on the southern border of Dayton and is east of Akron. The first settler in what would become Springdale was James A. McGillivray in 1824. By 1840, many farmers had moved to the area and a post office was established there that year. In 1847, John Pritchard opened a store and general mercantile business in what became Springdale's central square. A state-owned grist mill was built nearby in 1850 and served as a community center for many years before it burned down in 1931. The spring that still waters the community today was discovered by miners near present-day Springdale in 1859 while prospecting for coal near Mount Vernon Township. In 1865, Edward White built his home northeast of present-day Springdale on land he had acquired from Nicholas Kappenheimer earlier that year. White appointed himself "mayor" of Springdale after becoming its first resident official; he served until his death in 1886. A post office called Greenville was established atSpringdale soon afterward and continued to be used until 1907 when it changed its name to Dayton because of postal services being available only within Dayton Township then boundaries (the current form of Greene County). Springdale is a small town in north-central Ohio, United States. The population was 5,000 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fayette County. The first settlers in Springdale arrived in 1796 and named it for Mount Springdale, about 20 miles (32 km) to the south. The town was founded on a farmstead that still stands today, which had been abandoned by its previous owner because he could not find enough fertile land to grow crops. In 1814, an act of Congress designated Springdale as the site of what would become Ohio's capital; however, this designation was never ratified and Columbus eventually took control of the city. In 1827, when Ohio became a state under the new Union government, Springdale became part of Fayette County. Its residents voted to give themselves their own government and adopted a constitution that same year. The courthouse where court proceedings are now held was built in 1898. Springdale has experienced several economic expansions over the years; most notably during World War II when war production increased significantly due to military demand for munitions and other materials found in nearby towns such as Lorain and Youngstown. Additionally, it has been home to numerous businesses such as Wawa restaurant chain and Checkers casino since its incorporation into Fayette County in 1978. The economy has slumped recently due to tight labor markets throughout much of Ohio but recent investments by local business have revived some hope for growth potential within Springdale's borders once again
The first settlers in Springdale were William and Martha Harker. The town was platted on May 3, 1811, by John Sibley. It was named for General James Wilkinson who died in the war of 1812. The population at the time was just five people. In 1828, a post office was established in Springdale and remained in operation until it been discontinued in 1886. By 1870, the population had grown to twenty-six people and the post office continued to be used until it closed again in 1906.
