Springboro, Ohio is a city in and the county seat of Union Township, Perry County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,860 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Perry County and the second-largest city in Greater Cleveland proper. Springboro has been called "The Jewel of Cleveland" for its metropolitan area's wide variety of cultural attractions. The first Europeans to visit Springboro were French traders on their way from Paris to build an Overland Mail route from Montreal to New Orleans in 1795. The town was founded by Captain John Smith on April 6, 1796 as a small village near what is now Ironton Township. On July 5, 1800, General George Washington arrived at Fort Pitt with his army after defeating British forces at Quebec City; he ordered Smith to plat out a town named for him at Springboro. On December 10, 1800 – just two months after Washington's arrival – General David Wooster’s force battled numerically superior British troops under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Braddock during the Battle of Fallen Timbers outside present-day Springfield Township south of Dayton. After three days of intense fighting that left more than 100 British casualties and $6,000 worth of supplies lost (the largest sum ever lost during American Revolution), Wooster ordered Smith to submit without further resistance or damages; today's Uniontown stands on the battlefields where Braddock's forces were routed and driven back across the Scioto River into Pennsylvania about two miles southwest of present-day Portsmouth Square Shopping Center on East Street. In 1802–1803 residents erected a frame courthouse/ jailhouse on land donated by Reverend Samuel Morse while he served as justice of the peace for Union Township; this building still stands and is used as a community center. In 1811springboro became one of 12 townships formed within Perry County when it was organized from parts of Wayne and Stark Counties following Mexico's War with Spain.; soon afterward several mills began operations around town including mills owned by James Kappeler (northwest corner Main Street east side) & Isaac Allbright (southwest corner Main Street), both gristmills which continued until 1865 when they burned down; also in 1811 springborough had its first post office which continued until 1861 when it moved to North Hill pioneer house located north off State Route 9A just west of what is now Muskingum University campus northeast corner High School Road). This early township formational history can be traced back to February 15th 1796 when Captain John Smith laid out streets for his new village at springsborough according to his survey map dated October 3rd 1796 . There are many references indicating that springborough grew rapidly due process such as lots being sold quickly especially since there were noRoads or Streetsicer nearby so people had plenty access 2 Lots per month plus 1 lot free every week(if paid In Full). This indicates that people here wanted2 live close together so they could interact and trade etc.. In 1857, the community of Springboro merged with the larger city of Columbus to form a new municipality known as Columbus Township. On February 11, 1916, Dayton filed a petition for annexation with Springboro which was accepted on March 5th. The community now forms part of the Dayton suburb of Springfield. Springboro has experienced many changes over its history including being a site for military training during World War II and becoming an industrial center in the post-war period. Additionally, it has been home to several colleges including Case Western Reserve University (CWU) and Kent State University (KSU). In recent years, some redevelopment efforts have taken place around downtownSpringboro which has seen mixed results but is still one of the most vibrant communities in northwest Ohio.
