South Euclid, Ohio is a city in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 20,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Euclid is located on the southern edge of Akron and is bordered by Canton to the east and west, as well as to the north by Strongsville. The city lies just east of I-675 between State Route 12 and Interstate 670. The first European settlers in what is now South Euclid were farmers who came from eastern Pennsylvania in 1811. They named their land "Euclid" after one of their ancestors who had been killed in a skirmish with Native Americans near that area about three years earlier. The town began to form when several families decided to move there from other parts of Summit County around 1824. By 1830 South Euclid contained a store, tailor shop, physician's office and schoolhouse; it also had a Methodist church and two jails. In 1835 seven families moved into new homes on Park Avenue which became known as "The Village". In 1840 John Waddell built his house on Willoughby Road which still stands today as one of the most prominent buildings in town. Mr. Waddell was instrumental in helping develop South Euclid into an important center for trade and commerce during its early years – he served as treasurer for several years and was responsible for developing many main thoroughfares within the city limits today such as Vine Street (now Orchard Street), Willoughby Road (now First Avenue) and Third Street (now Elmira Boulevard). He also helped found numerous churches throughout town including Methodism's first church – Christ Church located on Willoughby Road – which opened its doors in 1841. He was succeeded by his son John Waddell Jr., who continued father's business practices until his death at age 83 in 1865; he left behind an extensive commercial legacy that continues to be heard today: Mr. Waddell Boulevard runs through downtown South Euclid parallel to Main Street where much of Mr. Waddell's original land remains extant; many businesses have been housed within various shopping malls located along this corridor over time including JCPenney, Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Company Store, Kmart Supercenter/Target Center etc.; furthermore Mrs.-John-Waddell-Jr.'s donation towards creation of University Circle - centered around her home - has made it possible for local students access highly ranked education institutions such as Case Western Reserve University or Temple University while living close by; finally another significant milestone occurred when Mayor Edward Hirsch announced plans for construction of a new hospital adjacent to Staats School District No 5 gymnasium inside City Hall - marking yet another major improvement project completed within Town boundaries since Mayor Hirsch took office in 2003! Today much like under predecessor Ed Hirsch' leadership South Euclid continues growth with exciting news being delivered each day such as multiple high profile projects scheduled for completion throughout 2017/2018 let alone further announcements coming down stream wether it be annexation proposals or even more ambitious developments such as $10 million dollar grant awarded recently funds will go towards expanding existing public library services! South Euclid, Ohio was once a thriving community and now it is a ghost town. It all started out in the late 1800s when some entrepreneurs decided to move to the area. They founded a few businesses and started to populate the town. In the early 1900s, South Euclid had a population of around 100 people. But by 1915, it had shrunk to just 10 people and by 1930, it had fallen below 50 people. The reason for its decline? Two things: World War II and economic depression. After the war ended, South Euclid became embroiled in what came to be known as the “Great Migration” – which involved many Americans moving westward in search of work during the post-war period. This migration led to an increased population in South Euclid because more people were looking for opportunity than they had ever seen before. However, due to poor economic conditions following World War II, many residents abandoned their homes and businesses in South Euclid over fears that they would never be able to return again should something happen to their homes or investments (e.g., another war). In recent years, there has been renewed interest in exploring this history of South Euclid because of its unique location within Cincinnati proper (just 15 minutes away from downtown) and because of its ties with early Cincinnatians like John Ahern (the first mayor of Cincinnati) and Thomas Sowell (a famous economist who served as assistant secretary at Treasury during President Harry Truman's first term). Additionally, research into this history has also revealed that South Euclid experienced several significant milestones throughout its lifespan – such as becoming one of only two towns in Ohioto receive city status on November 3rd, 1907; having a library built on Main Street in 1927; being home to several professional sports teams (most notably The Bengals), including both The Indians and The Reds; playing host annually each year since 1941 to The Summit Tournament*, which is considered among the most prestigious events associated with college athletics; as well as hosting multiple international festivals* throughout its years including an International Folklore Festival held every other year since 2006.*(*This event takes place at Greenhills Park.)
