South Euclid, Ohio is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,995 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settler in what is now South Euclid was John White in 1813. He platted and named his land "Lake Erie" after the then-undeveloped body of water in that area. The name stuck and South Euclid began to take on its current name in 1828 when it became part of the Northwest Territory made up of present-day Ohio and Michigan. In 1836, South Euclid became known as the Town of Euclid after General David Emerson's victory over Tecumseh at Battle Creek Hill. The town was incorporated as a village in 1865. South Euclid experienced some growth during World War II with many factories and homes being built for war workers who came to work on military projects or defense industry jobs. However, most growth has occurred since 1990 when new housing developments were created around Interstate 71/Upper Arlington Road and State Route 422 near downtown South Euclid. The demographics are increasingly diverse with Asians making up about 25% of the population while white residents make up about 75%. South Euclid, Ohio is a small town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Cincinnati on the Southwestern edge of the city proper. The ZIP code for South Euclid is 45121. The first permanent settler in what is now South Euclid was Nicholas Young in 1810. He and his wife founded an agricultural village on a tract of land they purchased east of Cincinnati from John Overstreet. In 1816, David Barnes bought the township from Young and built a large home there that still stands today as one of the town's most prominent landmarks. In 1827-28, George Stephenson built the Erie Railroad through Summit County to connect Cleveland with Pittsburgh and new settlers began moving into what would become South Euclid from all over eastern Ohio under the auspices of this new railroad development. In 1865-66, when Union General Ulysses S Grant advanced southward through Ohio during his “March to Victory” campaign and captured Athens/Middletown along with much else in central Ohio including Steubenville (now West Chester), North Bend (now Dayton), Canonsburg (now Lebanon), Monmouth Junction (now Norwalk), Delaware Heights (today’s Fair Lawn) and other towns and villages, South Euclid came within striking distance of becoming part of what would become Cincinnati but instead chose to secede to form its own municipality – which it did on July 16th, 1868 after years of peaceful protests led by Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest who styled himself Mayor pro tempore because no one had been elected to that post since April 12th following local elections which were nullified by state officials due to lack of participation by majority African American residents living in southern portions of Summit County as mandated by state law Today while some aspects continue to resemble their pre-secession days including active white supremacist groups like "The Ku Klux Klan" actively controlling key aspects such as criminal justice services while black residents primarily rely on public transportation or groceries located near their homes these neighborhoods are also home to some very popular businesses like Target and Home Depot which have helped spur economic growth in recent years particularly around downtown where several high tech startups have been founded or relocated recently thanks largely in part to federal stimulus funding awarded specifically unto South Euclid areas near I-675/I-71 interchange .
