Solanon was founded in 1812 by Solomon Westphal. The town was named for Solomon, the son of a German farmer and his wife, who died in 1797. The name originated from the fact that there were no trees in the area when it was first settled. Solon's only claim to fame is that it served as the site of an early fur trading post. After Ohio became a state in 1803, Solon saw its population grow rapidly due to its location on the route between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. By 1830,Solon had a population of over 1,000 people. It enjoyed a period of growth until the Panic of 1837 caused economic ruin for many towns across Ohio. In 1840,Solon voted to secede from Ohio and become an independent country within the United States. The town declined quickly after becoming an independent country and experienced significant decline throughout the next few decades. However, it regained some stability during World War II when much of eastern Pennsylvania moved into Solanon to work on munitions plants because of shortages elsewhere in Europe due to war restrictions. Although most residents left during the postwar years, some returned in recent decades and continue to live there today. Solanon is located at 38° 33′ 06″ N 83° 43′ 00″ W (38.960914 N -83.768222 W). According to the 2010 census,the population was 3233 people living in 898 households
