The history of artisan coffee in Solon, Ohio can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first coffeehouses in this town were started by Nicholas Roebuck and James Hogg. These stores served coffee made by various methods, including roasting beans on site, brewing espresso, and selling coffee beans direct to customers. By the 1840s, Coffee House & Brewery had become one of the largest coffee businesses in Ohio. They roasted their own beans and sold them directly to customers. Coffee House & Brewery was also a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1849, they built an addition to their business which became known as The Blockhouse Café. This building still stands today and is used for events such as weddings and funerals. During the late 1800s and into the early 1900s, many small-scale farmers began to grow coffee on their properties in Solon. This allowed for more consistent quality control across a wider area and helped keep prices low for consumers who could not afford expensive Starbucks drinks or other high-end coffees from other towns in Ohio. In 1906, original co-founder James Hogg passed away leaving his business ownership to his son Nicholas Roebuck Jr..Nicholas Roebuck Jr.'s first attempt at starting an artisanal coffee company resulted in failure but he kept trying until he finally succeeded with his first cup of cold brewed Joe (now considered a classic Americano). Solon is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Southville metropolitan area. The early history of Solon is tied to its location on the Scioto River which was an important route for travelers and traders in pre-European America. In 1795, General George Washington halted his army at Solon for five days due to a lack of food and water. American Revolutionary War hero and general Aaron Burr stayed at Solon during his 1804 visit to Ohio as part of his search for new land to settle. On July 4, 1825, General James Kildare made an official donation of land in what is now Solon Township to the Methodist Episcopal Church in memory of his father who had died years earlier while serving as chaplain with the U.S. Army near Havana, Cuba. In 1851, construction began on the first railroad in Ohio – the Cincinnati & Toledo Railroad – which would connect Cincinnati with Toledo and make it possible for people living east of Dayton to access farmland west of downtown that they could own or sell. The townspeople successfully lobbied Congress not to include Cleveland in the line because they felt that their city would benefit more from this railway than any other town within reach. A post office was established at Solon in 1853 and by 1870, there were over 100 residents living there including many farmers who grew crops such as wheat, corn, beans and soybeans along with fruits and vegetables grown by local families using traditional methods such as irrigation systems using ditches dug into steep hillsides near their homes. By 1890, there were 400 residents living in Solon with most being employed by various businesses located within walking distance including a flour millinery; a sawmill; two shoe stores; a bakery; two carriage houses; three hotels/motels; four blacksmiths shops; fifteen farms (including tenowned by women); sixteen churches (including one Methodist church); thirteen schools (including six elementary schools and nine high schools), one hospital (licensed by State Board of Health) and twenty-four storefronts yielding retail sales totaling $2 million annually during that decade alone! One reason why business owners choseSolon as their place of business was its central location just outside Dayton’s limits making it easy for them to transport goods both inside and outside Dayton while also having easy access to Interstate 270 which connected all parts of Ohio mainland without havingto go through downtown Dayton or any other major city center! Today much like then small businesses continue operating out-of-town providing jobs for locals as well as providing essential services such as grocery shopping delivered right up front door - something unheard of even back then! Solon is a town in Solon County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Solon was John Pemberton and his family who arrived in 1795. Pemberton built a log cabin on the current site of Solon High School in 1801. In 1807 James Fenton bought land from Pemberton and built a barn and gristmill on the east side of Mill Creek. A post office called Fentonville was established in 1811, but it closed due to poor health of the proprietor two years later. The first schoolhouse in Solon was erected around 1830 by Jno. Hartsfield (the father ofpresent day Superintendent). The first teacher attyed to School District No 7 were Mrs. Bledsoe and Mrs. Fontaine with Elisha Farnsworth as principal from1832 until his death in 1849; after which Mrs .Farnsworth continued alone for about 25 years until her retirement about 1860 The village of Solon developed around this time with several shops, four churches (Anglican, Methodist Episcopal, Baptist & Congregational), one public house (later tavern), three schools (grades 1-4), one garage/smith shop,Mrs.'s bakery (1910) and many other businesses that continue to thrive today including: Kohl's department store (now Macy's), JW Marriott Hotel - located on Boulevard des Anges off I-480 - , ChevronPhillips refinery - located just outside town limits - homebuilder David Blount has been building new homes here since 1978 Solon also features an annual farmers market
The first known settler in Solon, Ohio was James M. Ketchum who arrived in 1837. He and his wife, Martha, built a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. The couple raised five children and operated a farm until 1840 when they sold their land to John Sellers. Sellers built a store and warehouse at the site which became the nucleus of what is now downtown Solon. About 1850, Andrew Jenson acquired some of Sellers' land and started farming there as well. In 1865, Jenson donated a tract of land near the present day intersection of Main and Central Streets to build what is now Solon Community High School.
