Sidney, Ohio was founded in 1800 by Captain John Sidney and his wife Judith. The city was named for the ship which carried Sidney and his family to their new land in 1811. The City of Sidney was incorporated on October 15, 1837. In 1865, the city of Cincinnati merged with Sidney, forming a single city with its own government. On December 6, 1970, the eastern part of the City of Cincinnati merged with the southern part of the City of Sidney to form a new city called Cincinatti. The first settler in what is now Sidney was Capt. John Sidney who arrived in 1797 from Huntingdon County, England as part of an expedition led by General Washington. He built a cabin on the east side of Spencer Creek and started farming around 1800. A year later he married Judith (died 1802). They had six children: John (1799-1868), George (1801-1880), Harriet (1803-1875), Moses (1795-1866) , Anna Maria Jane (1798-1865) and Arthur Edwin Jameson Jr.(1800-1872). Captain John's death caused some disruption within society as there were no other relatives or friends to take up his place on their farm since all but one child had died young in infancy or early childhood at sea aboard HMS Dolphin while they were sailing home from Havana2 . However, over time those closest to him developed into one strong community that continuously enlarged through immigrants coming from various parts of Europe3 . This trend continued until after World War II when many people left for economic reasons4 . Captain John's daughter Harriet married Drury Morse5 who renamed their farm "Sidney" after himself6 though it originally contained just 1/8 acre7 . Drury Morse ran a busy medical clinic at this location for many years before moving away in 1886 to become President William McKinley's physician8 . By 1870 most residents here were farmers9 with only two building being erected during that decade10 : a Baptist church dedicated in 187111 and a post office12 which served the area until 190713 . From these beginnings much hard work went into making Sidney an important commercial center14 including developing river transportation15 ; founding schools16 ; creating streetscapes17 ; erecting churches and civic buildings; developing industries; hosting major events; and becoming known for its delicious ice cream19 ! Today Sidonia boasts more than 100 businesses20 - some dating back to preindustrial times21 - making it one of Ohio's most vibrant cities22
Sidney, Ohio was one of the first towns in the area that became west Michigan. It was founded by Captain James Caldwell and his family in 1792. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the main road between Detroit and Buffalo, as well as its natural resources such as coal and lumber. In 1814, Sidney become a village. In 1825, it became an incorporated town. During this time, Sidney also began to develop into a major railroad center because of its location on the Erie Canal. In 1860, Sidney lost its status as a town when it merged with larger Settlement Township to form Warren Township.
