Sidney was founded by General Sidney Sherman in 1817 and named for him. The first post office was established in Sidney on October 25, 1824. In 1840, Sidney had a total population of 514 residents and it remained that size until 1860 when it grew to 1,045 residents. The population growth stopped after that point and still remains below the national average today. The economy of Sidney is heavily reliant on agriculture which has been its mainstay since its foundation. Today there are over 60 businesses in Sidney and most rely on farming or processing agricultural products such as meat, flour, eggs, beans and other crops. The largest employer in town is the Sidney-Dayton Regional Airport which employs 375 people full time with another 150 jobs available through contract work or outside employment opportunities. Sidney's unique history can be traced back to 1817 when General Sidney Sherman arrived in what is now Dayton from Cincinnati to lead a military force attacking Native Americans who had settled along the Scioto River into what would become Dayton Township/Findlay County territory. He renamed his new settlement "Sidney" after himself because he thought people living near where he was living would know who he was and call him by name if they saw him anywhere around their area (a practice called "garrisoning"). When Sherman's army reached Indian Territory (now eastern Ohio) on November 17th of that year they destroyed all but one village before moving onto land grants given them by Washington Territory Governor John Wyandotte (under pressure from Ulysses S Grant). When Sherman returned home three weeks later he found that settlements had been formed all around his original camp site - including ones adjacent to present day Sidney - so he ordered his men not to burn any villages but just clear away any trees or buildings they encountered while occupying Indian Territory! This unusual order served as an early example of military occupation leading to development - instead of destroying entire villages as planned some settlers decided to build homes nearby while others started businesses such as taverns and stores taking advantage of military supplies dropped off by troops during their stay! Sidney, Ohio is a town in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Sidney is located on the Scioto River and is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Area. It lies between the towns of Westerville and Athens. The first people to settle in Sidney were French colonists who arrived in 1701. The name "Sidon" was given to them by Captain Jean Baptiste Bouchard. They built a fort here in 1703 and named it Fort Duquesne after Sieur Duquesne, an officer with the French forces that had come to America during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The French left this fort in 1706 and moved away from Sidney. In 1814, when TerritorialOhio became attached to the United States as part of the Compromise of 1850, Sidney voted to secede from Ohio because it objected to Kansas becoming a state within Oklahoma Territory (then Indian Territory). In 1846, when Kansas entered into statehood as Nebraska Territory, Sidney again voted not to become part of Nebraska but did join that new state. When Kansas repealed its Admission Act on August 16th 1861 due to strong Unionist sentiment elsewhere within the Great Plains region,[1] Sidney voted against joining Nebraska because it wanted Democratic Party patronage instead.[2] Douglas MacArthur became governor of Kansas on November 3rd 1861 and ordered all federal troops out of Omaha City;[3] accordingly, most residents of Omaha City came overland into Douglas MacArthur's newly created Nebraskan territory when they evacuated that city on December 31st 1861. During World War II (1939-1945), Sidney served as one of three military camps operated by US Forces Northwest under General George C Marshall near Chicago;[4] these facilities are now known as Offutt Air Force Base.[5] After Pearl Harbor On September 2nd 1941 local residents raised money for food relief agencies working throughout Japan starting with family grocery stores then going door-to-door collects canned goods such as tuna cans from Japanese civilians living abroad especially those in Shanghai Just before Christmas 1944 locals raised money for Toys for Tots We collected nearly 350 boxes filled with toys every day
