Military gift history in Sidney, Ohio began with the arrival of the United States Army in 1814. The town was home to a small garrison of soldiers and their families until 1870, when it became the base for Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1871, General Harrison ordered the construction of an artillery battery on Sidney's hill. This fortification helped support US military operations in central and southern Indiana during the Mexican-American War and World War I. The gift of cannons from Sidney to Fort Wayne is documented through a plaque at that site. In 1925, Mayor John Fenton dedicated a new park in Sidney called "Fort Wayne Park." That same year saw the opening of the first commercial store in town by J.C. Penney & Company. It would be another decade before downtown business took off with growth spurred by investment from businesses like Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford Motor Co., and other local companies. During this time, Sidewalk Avenue was renamed "Downtown Sidewalk" in honor of Mayor Fenton's efforts to make downtown more pedestrian-friendly and business-friendly corridor for residents and visitors alike. The late 1800s were also a time whenOhiopyle Pottery produced some of America's most famous ceramic items including dishes, cups, saucers and figurines celebrating everyday life experiences such as weddings and funerals among others (pictured right). Ohiopyle Pottery continued production into modern times until 2003 when it closed its doors due to economic conditions within our community (pictured below). Sidney, Ohio is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,852 at the 2010 census. It was founded by English settlers in 1824. Sidney is named after General Sir Sidney Sherman. The town was first settled by families of British origin who arrived in what is now Lucas County during the late 18th century. In 1824, General Sir Sidney Sherman set out from Portsmouth, England on a military expedition to explore and settle the newly acquired territory west of the Allegheny Mountains. When he reached Sidney Township in present-day Lucas County on October 9 that year, he named it for himself and assigned its entire area to his regiment as part of his territorial acquisitions. The townships were organized into villages in 1827 but reverted back to their original form two years later when they were combined with other nearby municipalities into Stanley Township (later known as North Canton). In 1830, Sidney incorporated as a village under revised state law which allowed for incorporation by zip code rather than individual townships or villages. Its growth continued through the 1840s as new settlers arrived and additional land became available within its boundaries; by 1850, it had become an agricultural center with about 200 residents and five stores. In 1865–66 local mill owners petitioned Congress to annex Sidney because of its growing wealth from lumber exports; however requests for annexation lapsed until 1893 when it was resurrected following passage of the Meridian Land Act which gave all township and village boundaries full legal recognition statewide During World War II much activity took place in and around Sidney including production of war materials at nearby Koppersville Arsenal (now part of Avondale) while also supplying food for troops stationed near Pittsburgh Today Sidney remains a small farming community with some 50 residents scattered throughout six unincorporated neighborhoods located along State Route 33 east of downtown
