It was in Sidney, Ohio on Dec. 8, 1941 that the United States Marine Corps deployed a gift to its allies and friends in Europe during World War II. The gift was a small but beautiful airplane known as the Grumman F4F Wildcat. The plane had been donated by General Motors Corporation and pilots from the Royal Air Force were given training to use it for transport within the European theater of war. The plane proved itself time and again as an effective means of transporting troops and cargo, most notably during Operation Overlord when it flew supplies to Normandy Beach. After World War II ended, the Grumman F4F Wildcat continued to be used by the Marines in various capacities throughout the Cold War period until it was retired in 1991. It is now stored at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California where it can be enjoyed by visitors today as part of their history museum experience.

However, due to its strategic location within easy reach of Cleveland, Sidney continued to serve as a base for operations for many years thereafter.

The courthouse was completed in 1830 and served as the nucleus around which Sidney developed over time into its current form as a city. During World War II, Sidney played an important role within strategic bombing operations during America's involvement in World War II; it had one of the largest airfields at that time within United States borders serving both military forces and civilians alike with launches from various locations across North America including Columbus AFB & Grand Forks AFB

Sidney was founded by General Sidney Sherman on July 10, 1813 as a trading post on the Scioto River. The first post office was established in Sidney on December 12, 1819. The community grew around its railroad and other businesses that developed during the early 19th century. In 1892, Sidney became an incorporated village when it amalgamated with neighboring Union Township and North Union Township to form Summit County. The township's name changed to Sidney in 1898 after Mayor John A. Smith donated land for the new village center. Sidney has been a manufacturing town since its founding and continues to produce goods such as paper products, steel tubing, cheese and flour products export from its factories into many countries including Europe and Asia.
