On December 6, 1923, the Sidney Coast Guard station was established as a result of the city's efforts to improve its safety. The first coast guard officer on duty was Captain John A. Hickey. At that time, the Coast Guard did not have any vehicles or stations along the shoreline. The first action taken by the Coast Guard was to order a boat load of apples from a local grocery store and deliver them to a picnic spot in town. Sidney, Ohio is a small town in the Logansport area of western Indiana. It was founded in 1814 by Captain John Sidney and his family. The village grew rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of its location on the National Road, which led from Philadelphia to Cincinnati. In 1907, Sidney became an incorporated city. Today, it has a population of about 1,200 people and is located just east of the Chicago-St. Louis metropolitan area. Sidney was one of several towns founded along the National Road during the early 1800s as part of the Indiana Territory settlement effort. The town was named for Captain John Sidney, who discovered it while traveling through this territory on July 4th, 1814. At that time, Sidney was part of Wayne County and had no legal rights to claim land within present-day Logan County boundaries. They built a log cabin near where they still reside today on Dickenson Creek extending into what is now Douglas Township but at that time there wasn't any water nearby so they made do with buckets from time to time when there would be enough rain or snow tofill their canteens! For many years until pipes were laid down through centralIndiana for irrigation purposes in 1903 Water Supply Superintendent A W Laughlin planted Sidneys Fountain across from current day First Baptist Church south side street corner opposite Public School lot back then we used Buckeye ditches dug long ago by our pioneer fathers also we raised chickens and pigs here also I raised corn ground beans millet potatoes etc etc my mother did all this work much before women got into America I believe her maiden name was Hennessey married Mr Cawley lived hereabouts when she came over with her husband some 25 years ago When Mrs Hennessey died some 20 years ago son moved out west & settled down at Independents but father continued farming hereabouts continuing operation until his death about 7 yrs ago We have always been religious people up till lately pretty strict Methodists although recently converted Methodist pastor took over but mostly do things our way We are quite proud of our City once known as "the Athens" & good naturedly nicknamed "The Willows"
