Sidney, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Logan County. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The village of Sidney was founded in 1825 by Methodist missionaries from Kentucky, and was named for General James Wilkinson who helped to found the United States military during the American Revolution. The first settler in Sidney was David Oglethorpe who arrived in 1796 and built a cabin on a hill near what is now city hall square. Sidney's history goes back to 1814 when it was settled by Loyalists who fled British rule. In 1830, Sidney became part of the United States and changed its name to Portsmouth. It was then part of Athens Township until 1854 when it seceded to form Trumbull County. The population increased from 2,391 in 1860 to 10,752 in 2000. In 1814, Sidney's founders were Loyalists who had fled British rule and wanted to create a new home for themselves in America. They named their community after General James Otis' flagship ship HMS "Sidney" which had been captured by the British during the War of 1812. The town was founded on what is now downtown Sidney and consisted of about 20 homes. By 1830, Portsmouth had become an incorporated village with a population of around 100 people and it continued to grow until it reached its peak as an incorporated town with a population of 3,000 people in 1840. It then lost its status as an incorporated town but continued to grow until 1850 when it seceded from Athens Township to form Trumbull County because there wasn't enough room for all the residents within that township. The town's growth stopped after that point because there weren't any other townships within Trumbull County that could support another large city like Sidney so its residents slowly moved away over time. Today, only a few families live in downtown Sidney while most people live outside the city limits on either side of I-81 (the primary transportation connector between Cleveland and Columbus).
