Sharonville is a town in Jackson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first recorded mention of Sharonville was in 1795 when it was spelled "Shepherdville". A post office called Shepherdville was established in 1812, and remained in operation until 1903. The townspeople of Sharonville began to arrive from central Ohio during the 1830s and 1840s, drawn by the new land grants that had been given to them following the Mexican–American War. By 1847, most of what is now Sharonville had been platted; its name honors Brigadier General Elijah Wimblet (1784-1851), an early settler and surveyor who helped lay out the town line on April 12, 1847. Sharonville experienced rapid growth after it became a village in 1907; by 1920 it had acquired a full city charter and grew rapidly into one of northeastern Ohio's largest municipalities. One reason for this growth was its location as an important transportation hub: it connected Cleveland with all points east and north of Cincinnati through two main routes – the Sanduskyand Jenney Roads – as well as with many smaller towns along those roads. During World War II, Sharonvillette played an important role as a major manufacturing center for munitions production throughout Northeast Ohio; although some industry closed during wartime due to factors such as competition from other countries or technology advances, much local employment survived intact thanks to postwar trends towards service-sector job creation. In recent years, however, significant portions of the community have lost their jobs either because they were replaced by retail stores or because technological improvements have rendered many manufacturing activities obsolete or too costly to continue producing at scale. In 1870, the town became a city and its own police department was created. By 1907, the city had a population of 80 thousand people and it annexed two other towns: North Royalton and South Royalton.
