Sharonville is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron metropolitan area. The first settler in Sharonville was John Witherspoon, who arrived on July 4, 1813. The town was platted in 1817 and named for Amos D. Sharon, a landowner in nearby Steubenville. The name may have been inspired by the hill near Sharon Springs which served as a watering hole for early settlers. In 1828, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act organizing what would become Medina County. In that year, there were only nine residents in Sharonville and it had no school or militia units to protect itself against Native Americans living in the area. However, due to its new location within Medina County and its easy access to water supplies through Shawnee Lake and other waterways, Sharonville quickly became one of the most populous settlements in Delaware County during the 1830s and 1840s; it also attracted businesspeople from neighboring towns who needed a place to store their goods while they awaited transportation back home on wagons laden with goods purchased at local auctions or brawls between Indian traders and American settlers over trade rights along these riverside routes (later known as "the Great Lakes").
