The community was founded in 1784 by Elder Shakers and developed into a small farming village. Today, it remains an agricultural center with a population of around 10,000 people. The history of Shaker Heights begins with the Elder Shakers who arrived in 1784 to start a new religious sect called the Quakers. The Elder Shakers were followers of George Fox who had started his own sect in 1690. The Elders believed that true religion could be found only within the framework of true worship and belief in one God. They also rejected materialism and worldly possessions. The community grew quickly and soon there were enough Elder Shakers living in Shaker Heights to form their own church. In 1811, they began construction on what would become their first schoolhouse which opened its doors to students in 1814. The school continued to operate until 1925 when it was replaced by Grange Hill High School which still operates today as one of Ohio's leading schools. In addition to education, agriculture was important to the village during its early years and many contribution from local farmers are still seen today such as apple orchard production, dairy farming, hayfielding, cotton ginning and more. Some of these operations continue today including Grange Hill Apple Orchard which produces over 50 varieties of apples annually; Grange Hill Dairy which processes more than 100 types of milk products; and Hayfields Inc., located near downtown Shaker Heights offers visitors access to over 12 acres of fields used for livestock husbandry including pigs, cows, horses, sheep and calves among others In addition to their agricultural pursuits, the Elders also helped found several churches including First Baptist Church (later renamed Gospel Hall) located on Tremont Street next door to their farmstead; Second Baptist Church (now Elmira Lutheran) on North Main Street; Third Presbyterian Church (now Stonington Presbyterian) on East Market Street; Fourth Methodist Episcopal Church (Now Gateway Methodist) on South Union Avenue just east of I-75 exit 20 ; Fifth Methodist Episcopal Church (Now Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel) on West Harrison Avenue just south of I-75 exit 21 . These churches remain active today with membership ranging from about 500 members up through congregations numbering well over 2 thousand people TODAY!

Shaker Heights was founded by Ebenezer Scudder and his family in 1788 as a small farming community on the edge of what is now Mahoning County. In 1801, Shaker Heights became an incorporated town with a population of around 100 people. The first school in Shaker Heights opened in 1802. In 1824, Shaker Heights became the site of the first national meeting of farmers interested in using improved technology to grow crops and improve lives. In 1830, Shaker Heights incorporated as a city under its own charter with a population of 511 people. The city's first mayor was John Aitken Poor Sr., who served for six years from 1830 to 1835. Other early mayors included James Caldwell (1836-38), Jabez Bowen (1839-41), Isaac Aspinwall (1842-44), Ezekiel Chandler (1845-46), Abel Norton (1847-49) and Thaddeus Stevens ( 1850-52). The Erie Canal arrived in Mahoning County in 1847 and changed much about life hereabouts; One result was increased trade with neighboring towns along the canal route - most notably Cleveland - boosting economic development throughout what would become known as "the Second City." On December 6, 1870 – two days after Thanksgiving – fire destroyed most of downtown business district including stockyards and factories located near Third Street between Euclid Avenue and Superior Avenue; it remains one of Cleveland's worst fires ever recorded with damage totaling $1 million ($ when adjusted for inflation). The harbor at North Beach allowed shrimpers to catch large quantities of mackerel while also providing access to goods coming downriver from Lake Erie for local merchants; this led to rapid growth during the late 19th century thanks largely to cheap labor available via transportation connections across then newly formed American colonies like Buffalo and Toledo which were becoming increasingly industrialized during that time period".
