The Marine Corps has been present in Shaker Heights for over a century. The community supported the service by donating goods and services to Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton. As part of their support, residents donated items such as clothes, food, monetary donations, and even furniture. In 1909, the Shaker Heights Merchants Association passed a resolution urging the government to award a grant to help local businesses expand. In 1912, the Marine Barracks opened in downtown Shaker Heights with 54 troops. From then until World War II, Marines garrisoned the city on two occasions: during the Spanish-American War in 1898 and during World War I in 1916. Today, Marines make up just 0.3% of Ohio’s total military population but they are responsible for defending our state’s capital city and surrounding areas. Thanks to their presence in Shaker Heights there is a strong connection between townspeople and these men who wear uniforms every day outside of work or school. This history is also reflective of how Marines have helped shape Shaker Heights into an American community – through service both before and after 9/11/2001 when violence took place throughout Ohio’s largest city center.

Shaker Heights is a small town in the Cincinnati metropolitan area, located on the east side of the city. The population was 18,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Beacon Valley Combined Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Shaker Heights arrived in 1795, when Captain James Cranch and his party from colonial Virginia landed on the Scioto River. A year later, John Fenton purchased land near what is now Fourth Street and North High Street from Thomas Payne and founded Fenton's Mills. In 1802, David Wilcox settled in what became Shaker Heights after purchasing 5 acres (2 ha) of land from Nicholas Greenough. Shaker Heights was incorporated as a village on July 15, 1892. On November 3, 1907 it merged with majority-black Dayton to form the Dayton-Middletown-Beacon Valley Combined Statistical Area (CSA). The population of Shaker Heights increased rapidly during World War II; by 1945 it had reached its peak of 20,000 residents. However, during the postwar period economic decline led to a decrease in development and poverty began to spread throughout the community. By 1990 only 6% of Shakers lived below poverty line; however this percentage has since declined significantly to 3%. In 2002 severe thunderstorms caused extensive damage throughout central Ohio including much damage to homes and businesses in nearby Over-the-Rhine Township which resulted in over $1 million worth of damages done primarily within that township alone. After an investigation into why some properties were not impacted by these storms there was determined that shoddy construction practices were responsible for many homes not being damaged or affected. After years of advocacy by local groups such as Operation Smile Columbus and others efforts culminated with approval by a state task force chaired by Governor Ted Strickland to make changes to zoning laws governing housing development in central Ohio which included allowing for more dense housing developments than had been allowed before. This change helped spur significant redevelopment across central Ohio creating new job opportunities for local residents while reducing crime rates within suburban neighborhoods adjacent to downtown Cincinnati although some displacement did occur due to higher densitygentrificationrican American transplants moving into areas vacated by white Europeans.As recently as 2014 most residents still identify themselves unambiguously as "shakers" or "this place."
