Shaker Heights is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 27,524 at the 2010 census. Shaker Heights is named for its founder, Ebenezer Shaker, who arrived in 1787. The community began as a small settlement on the Scioto River near what is now Scott Road and Noble Street. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on a major transportation route, rails that ran through it from Cincinnati to Cleveland. In 1892, Shaker Heights incorporated as a city. The townsite where Shaker Heights currently stands was first inhabited by Native Americans; they were probablyMuscovy Hounds or Shawnee Indians who had migrated from northeast Michigan in search of new land after their homeland was destroyed by British forces in the War of 1812. European exploration followed soon afterwards: early settlers Shipsman and Green discovered land east of the Scioto River about what is now Park Avenue in 1814 and again about two years later when he discovered part of what would be today's Wright Road (now Noble Street). By 1827, over 50 families had settled here and development proceeded quickly with initial construction concentrating around schoolhouses and churches which served as social centers for area residents until such time as transportation became available to allow wider spread cultivation outside their own homes - only then did homes become more elaborate with gardens behind them! During much of this time there were no streets or other public amenities – residents simply gathered around churchyards to hear sermons or engage in religious services which took place outdoors on open grounds free from traffic noise or dirt clods kicked up by horses pulling wagons laden with goods down Market Street between Second and Third Streets – an event that has been immortalized by etched stones located at both ends of Market Square commemorating "the great market day." This rapid growth gave rise to some pretty hefty tensions within society as different classes struggled against each other for control over resources (e.[g.] natural gas developments) while also fostering some pretty intense competition among ethnic groups (native Algonquian speakers vs Irish Catholic Germans) which often boiled over into violence; one example being an 1863 shootout between Indian scouts led by Captain John Copley working undercover for US forces during peace negotiations at Sandusky Bayou just south ofpresent-day Akron which resulted in three dead Indians including Copley himself before he successfully negotiated their withdrawal from hostilities). For all intents and purposes though, life went on relatively peacefully until World War II when suburban flight created vast demand for housing so scarce were these neighborhoods located – finally giving birth to what we know today as gentrification efforts spearheaded largely by native-born professionals who've bought up properties directly adjacent to historic districts thereby depriving those same natives (or others less fortunate)of residencyand control over their community fabric .
