Shaker Heights is a community in the northwestern section of Cleveland, Ohio. The population was 21,483 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Cleveland and Mahoning County. The first Europeans to visit Shaker Heights were Dutch traders who landed in what is now Shaker Heights on September 12, 1690. They named their landing point "Het Looiwe" after an Indian word meaning "the great place." The first permanent settler in what is now Shaker Heights was Nicholas Houghton, a Quaker religious leader from Yorkshire who arrived with his family in 1715. Reverend Houghton built the first permanent home in what is now Shaker Heights, which he called "Hancock'shield." The town was platted by George Washington and others during the latter part of the Revolutionary War as part of a plan to protect British settlers living along the western frontier. The town soon became known for its production of natural gas—the first such gas field in North America—and for its many mills and industries that produced goods such as cloth, paper, lumber, shoes and other items until they went out of business during World War II. In 1963, Shaker Heights became one of four communities within Greater Cleveland to receive city status. After years of growth and development led by Mayor Richard Mays (1961-1967), it experienced another period of decline following two economic recessions throughout the early 1990s. However, since 2000 efforts have been made by Mayor Tim Ryan (2011-2015) to revive aspects of community life including arts programming; increased access to Downtown Cleveland services; and creation or improvement of public open space including Parkland Square park adjacent to City Hall which has become a popular shopping destination for residents and tourists alike. Today Shaker Heights remains an important center for trade and commerce within Greater Cleveland with its focus on technology startups as well as its wide variety of cultural attractions including art galleries, restaurants and nightlife venues.; however some concerns remain about gentrification affecting traditional values within the community while new businesses are opening up without significant support from elected officials or neighborhood organizations
Shaker Heights was founded in 1777 by the Shakers. The community became a booming industrial town with a large cotton industry and a number of small businesses. The town thrived until the Great Depression, when it lost its jobs and went into decline. Today, the community is largely known for its Arts and Crafts movement architecture, as well as its rich history.
