In 1841, they moved to what is now Delaware Township, and their buildings were destroyed by fire. However, some of their possessions such as tools and furniture were saved and are today exhibited at the Cincinnati History Center. A later group of shakers arrived in America from England around 1850; these people continued to practice Shakerism but changed their name to "Dover Street Congregationalists." Dover Street Congregationalist Church still stands today on Maple Avenue in Shaker Heights. In 1951, Shaker Heights became one of several townships within Cleveland's city limits. As part of this change, its residents voted to become an official city with its own mayor and City Council members. The city charter was amended in 1968 to give the town more power over its own affairs; it remains an unofficial municipality today. It lies on the eastern edge of Cleveland and ZIP code 44115. The first Shaker settlement in what would become Shaker Heights was founded by Baptists in 1788. In 1801, a group of Quakers moved to what is now Shaker Heights from Bedford Township in northern Delaware County, Pennsylvania after hearing about religious freedom granted to the United States under then-President George Washington's First Amendment gift to the nation (the "Gift of Liberty"). The Quakers were pacifist immigrants who believed that violence was not only unwise but also sinful. They had fled religious persecution in their home country and were eager to establish themselves as a peaceful community where they could practice their religion without fear of retribution or retaliation from other religious groups. In 1815, when Euclid Avenue was plotted out as a public street through downtown Cleveland for development, few people living within its immediate boundaries objected; many residents simply took advantage of an opportunity to move away from urban centers during this time period and into rural areas around Cleveland that had yet to be developed.
