Sandusky, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. It was founded in 1837 by Solomon Sandusky, who became known as the father of the American football game. The town is named after him and also contains his old home, which is now a museum. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge appointed Mr. Sandusky Chairman of Ohio's State Board for Agricultural Research (OSBAR). This position allowed Mr. Sandusky to play a role in many important agricultural programs at OSBAR throughout his life including developing new varieties of corn and wheat; providing financial support for farmers through research grants; and helping to establishswitchgrass as an important planting crop in Ohio." In Sandusky, Ohio, there is history that goes back to the 1800s. The town was founded in 1800 by Polish immigrants and quickly became a center of industry. In 1814, Major James Wilkinson purchased the land that now makes up Sandusky and named it after his father-in-law, General George Washington Wilkinson. The town continued to grow and prosper until the mid-19th century when machine shops started coming into town and changed how business was done in the area. Railroads arrived in the area during this time and made transportation easier for companies to distribute their products. By 1900, there were over 100 businesses in Sandusky with a population of around 1,500 people. However, by 1940, all of those businesses had been destroyed by economic hard times which led to a decline in the city’s population from 10,000 to 5,000 people. However, due to efforts of Mayor John Fritchey (1920–1930),Sandusky has seen an resurgence over the past few years as it becomes an important cultural center for central Ohio. In addition to its music scene (which includes popular bands such as Stone Temple Pilots and Slipknot), Sandusky also has a diverse art history which can be found within museums such as The University of Findlay Museum of Art and The Cleveland Museum of Art among others.
In 1881, Sandusky, Ohio was founded as a township. In 1903, the township was renamed to Sandusky County and in 1907 it became a county. On November 15, 2002, the county was redesignated as Butler County.
