The national guard in Sandusky, Ohio has had a long and varied history. The unit was first organized on February 14, 1792 as the Third Battalion of the Scioto County Militia. It was dissolved on October 1, 1801. On May 3, 1810, the First Regiment of Volunteer Infantry (Ohio Volunteers) was organized in Sandusky by Governor George Brown. The regiment served for two years and then disbanded on October 15, 1812. On July 2, 1912, General Leonard Wood's Brigade of United States Volunteers arrived in Sandusky to take up arms against Spanish forces invading America from Mexico. The brigade included the Third Battalion of the Scioto County Militia which became known as "The National Guard." On September 12-13th, 1912, over 100 men from both units formed into two companies under command of Captain James Kappenheimer and Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Biddle and marched to town to parade through downtown streets with trumpets sounding while cannon fire blazed in the background. Captain Kappenheimer later wrote: "It is an event that never fails to interest me when I think back upon it; this march through our beautiful city...I can remember so well how we looked like--a bright detachment of American soldiers marching before the public eye." After their parade through town they went to Armory Square where they drilled for three hours each day until November 8th when they moved downriver to Battle Creek where they fought against Mexican forces at Punta de la Haza. In 1916-1917 there were several riots taking place throughout Ohio due to strikes by employees of Cuyahoga Falls Rubber Company who were not paid their promised wages. As a result General Leonard Wood ordered all military troops present be turned into civilians and duty status be lifted for all soldiers except those providing security for rubber companies plants across Ohio which continued being staffed with military personnel even after paychecks were sent out owed workers. This move however caused many members of The National Guard who had completed their service time to rejoin active duty only for it soon afterwardsto be recommissioned as part of other state militias in order serve again during World War I when America entered conflict with Germany

Sandusky is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sandusky is located on the southern edge of Akron and its ZIP code is 44103. Sandusky was founded in 1812 as a post office called Morning sandusky by Isaac Myers and others. It became an incorporated municipality in 1868. The current name comes from Chief Tecumseh's speech given to the Shawnee Indians in 1813 about his village on the Muskingum River: "My people have long ago discovered that this place [Sandusky] has great advantages for trade with various parts of our land; so I give it to you as a gift." The first settler was Nathaniel Lyon, who built a cabin in what is now downtown Sandusky in 1830. His son-in-law, Elijah White, built another cabin on the same site around 1840. In 1851, both men were arrested for polygamy after white women came to live with them and produce children; they were eventually released under conditions that they not return to their homes or marry other whites. In 1865, when Sandusky became an independent municipality, it adopted a new form of government known as a “Mayoralty” system where all residents were elected by popular vote rather than having one person appointed by the council. The first Mayor was Wm Hargrave (1866-1910). As such, much of what we know about early life and development here comes from his papers and speeches dating back to this time period! The growth of Sandusky during these years can be seen in many ways including increased building activity along Clinton Street between Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue – still one of our most vibrant business districts today – as well as increasing professional services offered within city limits like law enforcement and public works! Sandusky who had died in battle that year. The town's first store was built in 1837 and its first school was opened in 1840. In 1865, due to railroad construction through the area, sandusky grew rapidly and annexed neighboring towns including Defiance (1865), Perry (1866), Lyndhurst (1868), and Licking (1870). On July 1, 1870, all but Defiance were annexed into Sandusky proper while Lyndhurst remained separate until 1898 when it too became a part of Sandusky proper .
