It is bordered by Westmoreland County to the north and east, Butler County to the south and west, and Columbiana County to the northwest. The town was founded in 1837 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother James D. Rockefeller. Sandusky is one of four towns in Northwest Ohio that are home to The University of Akron. The first settlers in what is now Sandusky were three families from Maryland who arrived in 1837. They built a simple cabin on the Susquehanna River where they lived until 1840 when they moved upriver to what is now Trumbull Township. In 1846, John D. Rockefeller bought land at what became Risky Run for $2 per acre and began construction on a gristmill which he named Rockefellers Mill after his brothers James and John D., Jr.. The mill produced flour for local merchants until it was destroyed by a fire in 1865. After that event, Rockefeller donated money toward its reconstruction which resulted in the development of what is now called Park Avenue within Sandusky proper boundaries today.
