Salem is a city in the Cincinnati metropolitan area, located on the Ohio River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 667,171. The city is one of two in Greater Cincinnati and has a population of over 700,000 residents. Salem was founded by Nicholas Day in 1797 as an agricultural village on the east bank of the river between what are now Park Avenue and Monument Street. The town grew rapidly during its early years as more people moved to Salem from surrounding towns and counties. In 1814, Salem became a state capital after Ohio became a United States state. During its history, Salem has been known for its timber industry, banking and political stability. The current name "Salem" originated with Nicholas Day's original choice for his community; he wanted it to be called "Dover", because that is where he had been born and raised. Dover was not chosen due to popular demand but because it sounded similar to "Providence." When both communities changed their names in 1817 after Ohio became a U.S. state, Dover received first preference for new local government purposes; Salem received second priority because it contained more people at one time (thetown had over 300 residents when Delaware County was created from Kent County in 1800). After much discussion among both communities about which name would be better for them - "Salem" or "Dover" - day finally selected "Salem" based on its similarity to nearby Portsmouth, New Hampshire (then part of Rhode Island). The initial growth of Salem was due largely to lumber traffic generated by mills built along the riverbanks around what are now West Main Street and North First Avenue; these mills remain some of the most prominent landmarks in downtown today. In addition to its rich cultural heritage dating back centuries including several notable abolitionists living in town at various times during this time period - notably Reverend Amos Kendall – Salem also experienced significant commercial activity beginning with British traders operating out of what is now Exchange Place starting around 1695 until shortly before Indian Removal began in 1830-31 under General Marcy’sorders leading up to American independence that eliminated all Native Americans from this territory south of Lake Erie without compensation or relocation.- As late as 1860 there were only 10 stores statewide with over 60% being operated by men while employment opportunities for women were very rare outside early 20th century jobs such as domestic servants or laundresses/cooks

Salem, Ohio is a town in Boardman County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. Salem was founded in 1796 and named for Colonel Samuel deSalem. The first settler in what would become Salem was Nicholas Vining who arrived on May 11, 1796. He and his family were the only Europeans to live in what would become Salem when it was founded on July 16, 1796 by Colonel Samuel deSalem as an agricultural community east of Boardman Lake. Colonel de Salem had come from Rhode Island with his brother-in-law Daniel Boone to found a new colony on the Scioto River near present day Dayton. The original settlement consisted of 10 families and grew rapidly due to its location & fertile soil which supported early crops such as corn, beans, wheat and rice. On October 6, 1800 David Hinton erected a small log cabin where he later became known as the "Old Time Store." This store served as a stop on stagecoaches between Cincinnati & Dayton until 1884 when railroads came through Boardman County making it necessary for travelers to change horses at various stops along their route On November 5, 1801 Reverend John White baptized eight children from two families living near present day Beavercreek Township in what would become today's downtown Salem. Reverend White had come from Lancaster County Pennsylvania to preach Christianity to the Native American tribes that lived around this region including the Shawnees and Potawatomies who were then called "The People ofthe Woods". In 1802 Reverend White built a small frame church located south of Main Street which served as both religious & political center for much ofBoardman County during this time period In 1830 Nathaniel Hawthorne moved from Portsmouth NH to marry Mary Barton (daughters of Major Amos Barton) and settle down in central Ohio but within 2 yearsHawthorne had left wife & child behind after developing strong feelings for an unmarried woman named Esther Rogers whom he met while working at his father's mill near Lebanon Junction NJ . Hawthorne returned home after 6 months only to find that Esther had married someone else and move back into her childhood home with her kids . This event led Hawthorne to start writing novels about life among these primitive Indian people which continue to be popular today After serving 3 terms as Mayor (1839-41), Salmon P. Chase became Governor of Ohio in 1840 becoming one of America's most influential politicians . In 1851 President James K Polk appointed him Commissioner General US Army Southwest Territory - Kentucky Service Area making him responsible for all military operations within that area During Reconstruction following the Civil War Salem experienced rapid growth with over 400 residents settling there by 1870 When Cleveland took office in 1875 Commerce Secretary Albert G Weichsel created a post office at Salem renamed "Cleveland" effective January 1st The post office continued operation under new name until 1895 when it was discontinued due lack of customers It wasn't until 1907 that local resident Wm Fenton opened First National Bank located at 4 South Main Street which helped spur further economic development throughout SALEM during this time period
