The original armory building, which still stands on the north side of High Street in downtown Salem, was built in 1827-28. It served as a storage and barracks for artillery brought over from Kentucky and Tennessee during the American Civil War. Salem, Ohio is a town in Wood County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Salem was John Atlee who arrived on a horseback from Boston in 1796. Salem became a Village on November 12th 1810 by an act of the local General Assembly. The first post office in Salem was established at First and High Streets on December 8th 1811. The village had a population of ninety-eight citizens when it incorporated as a town on January 6th 1821 by an act of the General Assembly. A schoolhouse was built in 1827 and served until 1840 when it burned down. One brick building still standing today is used as the library and meeting house for Salem Township Schools which were founded in 1865. In 1870, sawmill owner James Hultgren donated land to build a new sawmill which would serve as the township's central square until 1915 when that mill closed down due to problems with water supply and lack of competition. On October 5th 1830 John Crouch settled near present day Holmesburg along with his family upon purchase of 640 acres (2 km²) from Joseph Whitehead for $4 per acre ($/km²). This land comprised much of what is now Holmesburg Township and portions of Wood County today
