Rocky River is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Rocky River was first settled in 1795 by David and John Rocky who named it for the Rocky Mountains which were visible from their farmhouse. In 1814, George A. Hill founded a flour mill in what is now Rocky River and also built a sawmill and gristmill there. The town was platted in 1825 by John Brougham under the name of Romeuerville. In 1853, rockies destroyed two steamboats on the Upper Great Lakes while fishing near Rockford; this led to an arms race between US Steamboat companies with each company trying to outbid the other for anglers’ favorite spots on the lakeshore. Because of this rivalry, both towns put up large stone retaining walls around their wharves to keep boats from getting close enough to damage them or destroy their hulls (the first attempt failed). The first school in Rocky River was established in 1827 by Rev. Samuel Wills as a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Market and First Streets. It became known as "Stark Academy" until 1840 when it moved to its present site across from town hall on First Street SE after being damaged by a flood that year. The school continued serving students through Union High School in downtown Cleveland until 1978 when it closed because of Republican controlled Stark County voting requirements which made attendance at schools mandatory for citizens over 16 years old during election seasons (a program still enforced today). In 1865, local entrepreneur Jeptha Lawrence opened his own grocery store at 10th and State Streets SW., becoming one of Ohio's early successful small business entrepreneurs. With his aggressive marketing techniques and shrewd investments into new distribution channels such as railroads and mail order houses he quickly built himself a formidable empire that included several restaurants including The Gilded Cage (later renamed Ziegfeld's), a department store open only during holidays such as Christmas & New Year's Eve along with many other businesses including five warehouses containing more than 2 million square feet of floor space at its peak - larger than any contemporary American industry and more than three times the size of what has been presently achieved within American retail stores since World War II (. In 1906 Lawrence bought out his partner William Hickey) forming Lawrence Bros., Incorporated (). Over time much smaller family-owned businesses were amalgamated into larger operations but most notably when Jeptha's son Jay set up Kenwood Manufacturing Co.,Incorporated (), which became one of America's largest manufacturers of air conditioners before selling its assets to GEICO Corporation for $1 billion in 1994). He McDonald brothers opening BigMac Restaurants throughout Greater Cleveland soon followed suit () . Finally large mall developments like Quicken Loans Arena (now University Circle) sprang up all around downtown Akron/Canton OH during these late 20th century period providing jobs for thousands while additional housing projects were constructed nearby such as Northshore Pointe condominiums () . Even though some aspects have changed dramatically over time such as shopping districts being replaced by malls with little or no retailing activity happening within them (i e – Downtown Akron now home to Strong Financial Center ), overall Rocky River has managed to remain essentially unchanged since its founding over 200 years ago!

Rocky River was a watercourse in the Ohio Valley that flows through Cincinnati and Dayton. The name comes from the Rocky Mountains, which are located to the east of the river. The first Europeans to visit Rocky River were traders and travelers who passed through on their way to trade with the Shawnee and other Native American nations. In 1795, Daniel Boone discovered Rocky River while traveling down the main stem of the river. He named it after his home region of Scotland, "Rochester." In 1814, John Crampton elected to make Rocky River a tributary of the Great Miami River in order to provide more water for Cincinnati. The creek became known as Crampton's Rapids because it was at one time obstacle course for horses racing on the Miami River. In 1827, John Maynard erected a sawmill on what is now Mill Creek near today's Donelson Road in downtown Cincinnati. This mill helped begin an important period in village history as mills began being built all over Cincinnati as people sought new sources of income. By 1830, there were 10 mills operating in Cincinnati alone. The importance of mills continued until after World War II when production stopped due to increased competition from synthetic materials and other technologies. However, some examples of older mills still functioning include those at West Side Cotton Mills (closed 1986), Waterfront Paper Museum (closed 1990), PB&J Mills (closed 1988) and Hanna-Barbera Productions Inc.'s Old Main Warehouse ( closed 1984). Today many buildings within downtown Cincinnati remain relics from earlier days including Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s Akron Works complex dating back to 1907 which continues manufacturing tires today; Jiffy Lube Cleaners & Waxes' Bald Eagle Building dating back to 1912 also remaining operational within its confines; Mountaineer Brewery building dating back to 1846 remains active while two others - First National Bank Building (1924) and PNC Plaza - both closed but still standing offer clues about early twentieth century life within city limits; United States Steel Corporation's "H" building constructed 1922 remains active providing evidence about steelmaking operations within city limits during this time period
