Rocky River is a town in Hardin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,502 at the 2010 census. Rocky River is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rocky River was founded by residents of the village of Rocky Ford on the Scioto River when that community was established in 1811. The name "Rocky" came from an early settler's observation that there were no trees along the riverbanks for fuel and wood to be used for heating or cooking. In 1815, a post office called Rocky Ford was established at a location where Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard now stands. The first store in town opened in 1820 and continued to operate until it closed due to lack of customers during the Jacksonian period (1828-1831). The settlement around Rocky Ford gradually grew as people began traveling westward along the Scioto River seeking new land and opportunities for agriculture. By 1830, all but two of the original six businesses in town had closed because of increased competition from neighboring towns that had been founded since 1800 near Cincinnati. However, some early settlers were able to keep their businesses open even though they could not generate enough business income from farming or other activities to support themselves financially. One such pioneer entrepreneur was John Ahern who operated a blacksmith shop and wagon shop out of his home from about 1830 until his death in 1840; these operations allowed him to buy land adjacent to what is now known as Park Avenue south of Main Street and provide business services needed by many other small towns located within easy access by wagon or horseback across miles of fertile agricultural soil lying between Miami Lake on one side and Cedar Creek on the other; this area became known as "Ahern's Landing." In 1839, local citizens voted to change their name to RockyRiver after surveyors recommended using this name because it fit better with surrounding settlements having similar names such as Hardin (Harding), Allen (Allen), Greenville (Greenville), Brownsburg (Brownsburg), etc., all located along either sides ofriverine valleys forming central Ohio country during this time period; these settlements sprang up around forks joining several major rivers which formed this valley:the Scioto on one sideand Little Miami on another whilebeautiful rolling hills still remain today including partsof present day Akron and Covington on opposite banksofthe Ohio River creating what has come to be known as "The Hills". This donation made history because it was the first time a warship had ever been donated to the Marine Corps by an individual- Mrs. Kennedy also became the first lady of America after her husband's election victory on November 6th that year. She would later give away another six warships between 1950-1953 inclusive before she died in office on February 27th, 1961 aged 80 years old. 2) The USS Indianapolis - Another ship that served during both World War I and World War II as either an aircraft carrier or battleship, this time it was donated by Indiana Governor Frank Murphy who said he wanted "to do something special for our country" when he saw footage of Japan bombing Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. The ship had previously been used by President Franklin D Roosevelt during WWII as part of his Atlantic Fleet off North Africa before being sold to Turkey in May 1945 for use as a hospital Ship until becoming grounded at Izmir Naval Base in early 1946 due to corrosion problems caused by exposure to Mediterranean water conditions unsuitable for U S Navy personnel living aboard her while under Turkish command.. On July 26th 1945 torpedoes were fired from Japanese submarines into her hull killing all 25 American sailors onboard including Commandant William Crippen who opposed any Japanese military action against Pearl Harbor despite orders from Secretary Stimson not to extend military supportemetery efforts beyond Leyte Gulf where they were taking place at that time.. Rocky River is a small town in Henry County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,715 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. Rocky River was founded by German colonists in 1796. In 1825, it became a village and in 1836 it became an incorporated town. The name comes from Rocky Run, a tributary of the Scioto River that flows through the town. The first settler in Rocky River was Conrad Weckerle who arrived in 1796 and built a cabin on what is now State Route 22 near present-day Rocksville. Weckerle's cabin is preserved within the limits of RockyRiver Municipal Park to this day. He also helped found nearby Athens Township about two miles west of Rocky River on what is now State Route 422. In 1825, when Ohio became a state, Rocky River became part of Columbiana County and its first mayor was Elijah Cady (1784–1848). That same year saw further growth as farmers moved into the area to farming following new transportation methods such as wagon trains carrying goods overland from Pennsylvania or via riverboats across the Great Lakes region. By 1830, there were seven businesses operating in downtown Rocky River with three saloons and one hotel among them. In 1836, when Ohio merged with Indiana Territory to form Indiana University – IU – Fort Wayne Township trustees decided to move their school from Purdue University's main campus at West Lafayette into what would become known as "The Village". At that time only white men could own land inside IU's boundaries so trustees commissioned architect Ebenezer Howard to design a brick school building on Harrison Avenue which would serve both local students and staff members until 1984 when all university buildings were replaced by modern facilities under one roof pursuant to then President Michael Papp’s “One Campus at One Price” program goal for allIU campuses nationwide. A fire destroyed portions of Ft Wayne during 1886-87 season while supplies were being stored inside for use during winter break; no injuries resulted but large quantities of lumber were lost including many handcrafted items housed inside improperly protected warehouse spaces which still remain extant today as part of Heritage Collection administered by US Departmentof Interior National Historical Park Service DDR #2191
