Rocky River is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Dayville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a post office on May 12, 1836, and became a village on December 15 of that year. It was named for General James A. Rocky Mount (1796-1860), an officer in the Union army during the Mexican-American War and later United States Representative from Ohio's 4th congressional district. In 1868, when Dayton became an city, Rocky River became part of that city's limits. In 1907 it merged with neighboring towns of Centerville and Parkersburg to form what is now known as "Rocky River." On November 5, 2009, voters passed a referendum calling for the merger of all three towns into one municipality. This proposal received 53% support in favor and 47% opposition across all three towns' ballots; thus the merger took place on December 1st and Rocky River residents were automatically transferred to the new municipality without any further action by their governments or citizens.
