Over time, the navy has played an important role in Riverside's economy and culture. In 1853, the navy built USS Constitution for the United States government. This impressive vessel was instrumental in helping to improve American maritime power and make America a global player on the seas. The navy also built USS Monitor in 1861 to help protect Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Since then, Riverside's navy has continued to play an important role in our community. In 1989, USS Dwight D Eisenhower was dedicated at Riverside Naval Shipyard as part of Project Nimitz – marking 50 years of naval activity in Greater Cincinnati. Riverside is a village in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Muskingum Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white man to settle in what is now Riverside was John Wilkinson in 1800. He and his family built a log cabin on the current site of town in 1802. The Wilsons were among the earliest settlers and also founded New Brighton as a post office in 1824. In 1830, James Aiken organized a band of Indians led by Chief Tecumseh and moved from Canada into what is now Muskingum County and set out for Ohio under the leadership of Aiken. They arrived at what is now Riverside on July 14, 1830, just before General Andrew Jackson's march against Native American resistance began known as the Trail of Tears. Aiken's group camped near where Riverside stands today while they awaited supplies and reinforcements that never came; they eventually surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant's forces January 17–21, 1831 after being refused food and shelter by Joseph Smith who had succeeded Aiken as leader of the Indian band. After surrendering their weapons and horses to General Grant, some 500 Indians living around present day Riverside took refuge with local whites until Ulysses S. Grant finally ordered them all killed or driven off February 15th when he discovered their location east of Vandalia (now Muskingum). Today many descendants still live in Riversideclose to relatives who have come here since 1850s across states lines duringReconstruction period US government policies discouraged African Americans from moving westward into newly Freedmen states such as Michigan Territory during this time frame therefore many black families relocated eastward into rural areas like Miamisburgand Lima forming "black villages" outside major cities during this time period

It is located on the southern banks of the Muskingum River and has been settled since 1792. Riverside was incorporated as a town on March 15, 1847 by order of the General Assembly of Ohio under section 5, Article VIII, Chapter XXVII of the Constitution of Ohio. The townsite lay within what is now Trumbull Township and was named for Lieutenant Colonel John Cranch (1762-1825), who surveyed much of what makes up today's Riverside Township. The first post office in Riverside opened in 1836. In 1851, it became a principal city in Hamilton County with a population over 100,000 people after being joined by neighboring DeWittville and other towns along that county line during an annexation process overseen by then-President James K. Polk. After becoming an independent city again in 1907 following its annexation intoHamilton County proper, Riverside continued to grow rapidly until World War II when it lost much population due to military service and lack of available housing; its current population only reached 20,000 before declining again following World War II recession statewide growth rates In 1951, after years as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and proximity to major markets like Columbus (four hours away) or Cleveland (eleven hours away), Riverside experienced rapid suburban development with new houses built just beyond its original downtown core thanks to Interstate 75 which connected Dayton across the river from Cincinnati through Trumbull Township into central Ohio Today's downtown core remains one of few remaining downtowns left in Greater Cincinnati despite heavy suburban growth that has destroyed most traditional cultural values associated with smalltown life The lack of any major transportation corridors between eastern Kentucky/Cincinnati/Daytona Beach/Middletown etc., combined with government indifference towards high-density suburbia have resulted in significant decline in traditional economic activity while large portions are effectively off limits to most people without special permits or zoning approvals
